    It's a 533fsb part. (Pentium d805). 20*133, with 20 being the multi. 133=fsb
533=133 quad pumped for Intel. (I think)

IIRC-the D820 series and up are 800fsb parts

    Hey Donut....
Could you tell us (or me anyway :dunce:) how you went about determining these specs?

    Thankyou!

The RAM thing just means if you have an 800mhz FSB CPU then you have a quad-pumped 200mhz system bus. To run the memory you will have a ratio of 200mhz.... for pc3200 its easy as its 200mhz (DDR400). pc2700 memory runs at 166mhz (DDR333) or less but you dont get that ratio (5/6ths) for some reason out of motherboards. the easy option it gives you is 4/5ths of system bus ie 160mhz (DDR320).
If your CPU has an FSB of 533mhz it has a quad-pumped 133mhz system bus. pc2700 memory runs at 166mhz (DDR333) which is a ratio of 5/4 of system bus.

at least...i think this is right :-)

Myth, that makes perfect sense - great answer.

DogDragon, going for that 160MHz/320MHz setting sounds like it may be the solution. :)

It was real easy, it used to be my proc.

Actually CPU-Z will tell you, if you can get into Windows. Or if you use the numbers printed on the top of the processor, you can go to the manufacturers website and find the specs there.

Another option, go to your favorite store (Newegg, E-Wiz, ZZF, etc.) and look it up there.

dont ask me why u dont get a 5/6ths or 6/5ths multiplier chip , I dont know. and dogdragon...you dont actually get the choice...your CPU will have locked multipliers maybe...but certainly you cant run a 533FSB chip at 800FSB..it will just lockup unless you got liquid nitrogen cooling or something :-)

but as its a 533FSB part then your memory should be running at 166mhz (DDR333) as you already have seen in BIOS or startup screen.

As to why your CD drive doesnt appear to have any media in it, am I right in thinking the only thing not changed so far is the motherboard? is this a new item? maybe its just kaput

Some quick specs of DogDragons setup
    Asus P5P800SE
    Pentium D805 proc.
    1gb (2-512mb) Pc3200 ram
    Big Typhoon CPU cooler.

Something I thought of to check (while typing this) check the backplate of the cooler make sure it isn't shorting out on the mobo. The pad between the mobo and plate should prevent this but...

fyi- this setup I sent to DD, that's why I know so much about it.:D

    Ok Hold it
I'm still a newbie when it come to that part,
So what? There a jumper on the motherboard to change?
or do I need to put it back together and get up to change
    it in the setup?

if you set the ram speed in the Bios to "Auto" you should be fine. Double check the manual if in doubt. I don't remember there being jumpers on the board for your fsb speed.

Well when I set the bio to default shouldn't that slowed it down to 320MHz?

Right I figture that out cause I knew it was running at 333MHz
so turn it down I think is the answer.

It should, however I don't remember if the board will run the ram async from the proc.

    anyway you should be set.

333 is fine. (default for pc 2700, which is what you board should read it as)

ok but the book says "When using 800 MHz FSB CPU PC2700 DDR
DIMMS run only at 320MHz(not333MHz) due to the chipset limitation.
    so what does that mean?
I hear what you're saying and see what the book saying and lost in the middle

Sounds to me like the chipset doesn't fully support 800fsb procs. (or not with PC 2700). in your case it doesn't matter because you have a 533 fsb cpu and pc3200 ram. the ram will run (at default settings) 333fsb.

I've got an old Opteron board that is similar, due to chipset limitations I run 800fsb procs but can only run pc2700 ram. With pc3200 it will not even boot.
  • edited January 2007
not if your CPU is a 533mhz FSB model (as donut suggests it is and I would believe him as its simple to check .... i'm not allowed to post links yet
yes, definately a 533mhz model so will run your pc2700 ram at 166mhz (DDR333) not at DDR320

No new motherboard will have jumpers for FSB and multiplier...all will be controlled through BIOS or in your OS environment

I just re-read the whole thread, but may have missed it. If so, sorry if these things have already been tried:

Have you tried booting from the cdrom drive with both the floppy drive and hard drive disconnected and disabled in the BIOS?

(I know this won't get you anywhere as far as getting an OS installed, but it might be useful to see if that forces the system to boot from the cdrom.)

Second question: Have you tried booting from a floppy disk?

And a third: Have you tried disabling the SATA Controller?

Ok now they're are some things I understand. Ok I will try doing what you think in the order you have them

Try hooking the cd drive up as the Primary Master. Don't attach anything as a Primary Slave. Leave the Secondary Channel with nothing attached to it, too.

Since you can boot from a floppy it indicates that the BIOS is doing its job by searching all its options for a bootable disc. It sounds to me like you either have a bad cd drive, a bad cable, a bad disc, or that the Secondary IDE Channel has croaked. We can eliminate the last possibility by doing what I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

Have you tried different bootable CDs? I know you mentioned that you've tried several drives you pulled out of other machines - did you make sure they were jumpered correctly for Master/Slave? There have been many times (OK, a few) when I've hurriedly grabbed a drive from another machine for testing purposes and forgot to check the jumper. You might want to try both Master and Cable Select (CS) and see if that makes a difference. Also, make sure the drive is attached at the end of the connector - not on the middle connection.
