Am I missing a "fix" for my slow computer?

edited January 2007 in Science & Tech
Hi everyone,
I happened across this excellent and very informative site while trying to find some help for my slow computer and annoying messages. I've tried a lot of the fixes posted in the stickys but I'm still not satisfied so I thank anyone in advance who can help a novice out.

First:
I've cleaned out using ATF
Cleaned with AdAware and Spybot
Downloaded spyblaster
Ran Kaspersky and BitDefender
Updated Windows, Java, and IE

My issues:
1. As well as being slow the computer also takes a real long time during startup
2. While playing a video (youtube, windows), the screen and mouse freeze-up and a high pitched and continuous beep are heard. The length of the freeze-up varies and sometimes doesn't happen at all.
3. "Windows Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low" pops up all the time in the lower right.
4. Other pop-ups that happen during shutdown:
-WindowsFormsParkingWindow
-End Program ccApp
-ShellIconHiddenWindow
5. A box pops up for Windows Defender and reads:
-Application failed to initialize: 0x800106BA. A problem caused windows defender service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or search help and support on how to start a service manually.

After doing the above "cleaning and scanning" here are the saved logs.

nothing found by AVG AS..lets try this,Please run the BitDefender online scan from here; http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
You will need to allow an active x install for the scan to run.
Leave the scanning options at default and press "click here to scan"
When finished scanning, click on "click here to export the scan report"
Save it to your desktop, at "file name" type in "bdscan" then click save.
Please zip the bdscan.html file then attach it to your next post along with a new hijackthis log

  • edited January 2007
Actually we do still use Norton. It's odd but the Quarantine came back as being empty.

thats fine, please do the following..
Download this file to your Desktop - combofix.exe
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall return with combo & new HJT log

Those all have to do with when my wife was connecting to her work. We actually had to bring the tower in for them to set it up. The good news is that she now has her own laptop for work so I believe that all her work stuff is deleteable on this computer. I'll ask her tomorrow if in fact I can completely remove her work stuff from this computer.

    Thanks.

I was told she doesn't need those programs anymore. They can be removed if we want to.

I did a HiJackThis scan, selected these four items and then selected "fix checked" and then rebooted but they still appeared when I scanned again.

hmm,Please download/run this tool-->http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe it will scan for spyware alphanumerically and if/when it detects something a prompt box will come up asking you to remove or ignore choose remove but some of the items it detects maybe programs you intentionally installed such as an arcade game if this is the case simply press ignore then once the scan is done it will NOT produce a log so don't worry about posting one just try and note some of the things it removes and list them in your next reply (if possible) and reboot when it asks you to and also return with a fresh HJT log

When I click on the link the screen that pops up says "Internet explorer cannot open the webpage"

yes, for some strange reason there page isn't working..lets try this-Go to this site: Trend Micro Anti-Spyware-scan
Click the Scan and Clean your PC and save it to your desktop.

    * Doubleclick tmas-web-scan.exe-icon on your desktop
    * Click agree to accept the terms of the license.
    * After loading the definitions, click Start Scan
    * When the scan is done, click Scan Results
    * Check every item that was found (normally they are checked by default, so make sure they are all checked) and click Clean Threats Now
    * A confirmation prompt will appear. Click OK
    * Click Exit.

    Reboot your computer.
After reboot, you'll see that the tmas-web-scan.exe-icon on your desktop will be gone, but there will be an Antispywarelog instead. It's a textfile.
Copy and paste the entire content of it in your next reply.

I'm not really sure how to save this one to my desktop. I ended up running the progam anyway and all it found was a cookie for Short-Media. I never saw the tmas-web-scan.exe-icon on my desktop.

    edited January 2007
sorry about that some of those directions were off:eek3: but since it only found a cookie, which is nothing to be alarmed about, your system I'd say is free of malware, have you tried a defrag?
  • edited January 2007
Yeah I defrag about once a month.

What I'd like to still get rid of is all the "JMGPlan" stuff from post #11

That windows defender box still pops up every time on startup as well and I'm not sure what that really means.

that stuff isn't causing any problems though, this may not be a malware problem..you may get better help from the windows experts in the windows forum, would you like me to move this thread there?

    Sure

I really do appreciate all your help. This novice has learned alot the last two weeks.

    2. While playing a video (youtube, windows), the screen and mouse freeze-up and a high pitched and continuous beep are heard. The length of the freeze-up varies and sometimes doesn't happen at all.

Sounds like bad clusters on the harddrive. I would run a complete surface scan:

    I'm in jmoney.

ErvG35, I read the thread. I don’t remember seeing where you said how much RAM you have or what kind of horsepower your hardware has in general. What I see are a lot of processes running that are eating your computer alive. And that low memory error you see is often the result of a process that has a memory leak, or just too many processes running and swamping your computer. And you have one process in particular, CTHELPER.EXE, that has a real reputation for running away with your computer.

First lets clean up some stuff. Run HiJackThis and put a check beside these items, click "Fix Checked", then reboot and repost a log please.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTStartup] C:\Program Files\Creative\Splash Screen\CTEaxSpl.EXE /run
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDVDPatch] CTHELPER.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C-Media Mixer] Mixer.exe /startup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Lamp] "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP PrecisionScan\PrecisionScan Pro\hplamp.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MoneyAgent] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\Money Express.exe"
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
    O4 - Global Startup: DataViz Inc Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\DataViz\DvzIncMsgr.exe
    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

Well over half of these are programs that run all the time and check for updates. If you still HotSync to your Palm, leave “O4 - Startup: HotSync Manager.lnk = C:\Program Files\Palm\HOTSYNC.EXE” alone. Otherwise, you can kill that too.

In addition, your sound card seems to liter your computer with processes, and I know you get that screech thing. In particular, CThelper.exe is well known to freak out and take %100 of your CPU….which would make your computer grind to a halt. Here is just one web site talking about it. For my money, I’d take all the Creative Labs processes out of here, disable your sound card, and go buy a new one. Unless you’re particular about your sound, I’m talking about a $25 investment.

I also see two anti-spyware programs running. Not only do they tend to take considerable resources, but they can also fight each other a bit. Given the fact that Windows Defender is throwing an error at you, why not kill that and just live with the AVG one?

totally true! having 2 is actually worse then having none at all! they clash with each other, and like mtrox said kill system resources (RAM) so ERvG, uninstall ONE only 1! and leave the other intact;)

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

I ran the HighJackThis scan and cleaned out the mentioned items. Can you please explain what this log even is? I don't even know what this is a record of. How are these items placed here? I'm also trying to delete out the stuff on lines 017 but they reappear every time after rebooting.

Regarding Windows Defender, how should I delete this out? A search turned up: Windows Defender.MSI on my C drive. Just delete it out of the Add/Remove screen?

    Thanks again.

Can you please explain what this log even is? I don't even know what this is a record of. How are these items placed here?

Here’s the principal Erv. The air conditioning compressor on your car has a clutch on it so that the engine only has to turn it when the temperature in your car is high enough that you need cooling. The rest of the time it sits there and takes no power from the engine. Many software companies want their “compressor” to run all the time so that it has a head start when you use their program. Others want to use some of your engine to run something that's always checking for updates that may or may not be important to you.

If you ran a HJT log right after installing Windows from an OEM disk, this log would have about 10 items. Then as you intentionally, or worse yet, unwittingly install programs, that program’s installer plugs things into your computer so that the program will run. Some things are necessary, others not. One of the things I asked you to delete was Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk. This is just a part of Adobe Reader. If Adobe has their way your “engine” will run part of their program all the time, just so Reader will start and run faster on the rare occasions when you pull up a .pdf file. Adobe will run just fine without this head start.

So to fight spyware and other stuff that takes over your computer, HJT goes to all the places in Windows where software code can be started automatically. But that’s also what we need to do to clean things up so that as little as possible is being powered by your engine when you’re at idle.

I'm also trying to delete out the stuff on lines 017 but they reappear every time after rebooting.

Don’t bother Erv. This computer was attached to a domain at one point…meaning it was part of a business network. You won’t get rid of those 017’s with out removing it from the domain. And if you do, the user you are logged to may disappear and that opens another whole can of worms not worth going into.

Here’s a little more trimming you could do Erv.

Might as well just clean house on anything whose file is missing:

    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

You have a Maxtor external hard drive with RetroExpress backup software. If you use it, great. If not, or the hard drive is elsewhere and not been near this computer for a while, might as well get all of this.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RetroExpress] C:\PROGRA~1\Dantz\RETROS~1\RetroExpress.exe /h
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MXOBG] C:\WINDOWS\MXOALDR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~1\mimboot.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MaxtorOneTouch] C:\PROGRA~1\Maxtor\OneTouch\Utils\OneTouch.exe

Better yet, if you don’t use Retro uninstall the program as it’s services are also running down at the bottom of the HJT log. To uninstall that, and Windows Defender (don’t just delete the folder…..you’ll just make errors and…well sort of a mess), go to Start> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs. It will take a few minutes for the list of installed programs to populate. Just click on Windows Defender or anything else you want to remove. One or more buttons will appear on the right side that give you options to change or remove the program. Follow those steps.

Then after a reboot, run ATF again to clean out all temp stuff and prefetch, then defrag.

If you are still having the problem after all of this, next time you see (and hear) the problem, hold down Cntrl+Shift, then hit Esc. You will be in something called Task Manager. If your computer is sick it might take a while for it to come up. Click the Processes tab. On a healthy computer the bottom process, System Idle Process will have about 95% to 99% of the CPU activity. When your computer is running extremely slow and the sound card is screeching at you, some other process will have 100% of your CPU. Note which process it is. That is where our problem lies. I asked you to delete CThelper from HJT because it has a reputation of going wild and taking 100% of the CPU.

EDIT: missed one Erv. If you don't use MusicMatch kill this one too. And you might even remove it in Add or Remove while you're there. If you listen to music through iTunes, Windows Media Player but never use MusicMatch, kill it.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~1\mimboot.exe
