You'll need the drivers for your Sound Blaster 16 card.

And my DVD player doesn't seem to be working (installed) either... any way how to get all this hardware installed quickly? Thanks
N-o-w you get to take the case cover back off. ;)

    Shut the system down.
    Take the case cover off.

Assuming that your DVD player is the o-n-l-y device connected to the secondary IDE channel (and that it is n-o-t connected to the same channel as the hard disk drive (which should be connected to the primary IDE channel).....

Pull the IDE (ribbon) cable and the power connector off of the DVD player.

Take a close look at its jumper configuration. (You may have to pull it out of the case to do this)

Make sure it is jumpered to MASTER

Place it back in the case and fasten it down.

Plug in the l-a-s-t connector (the connector fartherest away from the motherboard) on the IDE (ribbon) cable to the DVD player.

Be sure to orient the cable so that the outside red wire is located on the same side as the DVD player's power connector. This red wire connects to pin-1 on the IDE cable's connectors and it should be oriented to pin-1 of the DVD player's connector as well.

Plug a power connector into the DVD player and you're done w/ that end of the business.

Now, look at where the IDE cable connects to the motherboard. Look very closely at the connector.

You may see a very small (1) (etched on the motherboard) at one corner of the connector or there'll be a sort of triangle at one corner.

In either case, this denotes pin-1. Plug in the IDE cable so that the red striped-side is aligned w/ pin-1 of the connector.

That's it. Fire up old Lazarus and let's see if his DVD player works now! (you might want to leave the case cover off for now..... :smiles: )

    EDIT://
If you have two optical drives on the secondary IDE channel, these directions hold true w/ one exception....

Jumper the drive connected to the last connector on the IDE cable (the connector fartherest away from the motherboard) to MASTER and the one connected to the middle connector to SLAVE.

My questions were a bit blunt there cause I'd been up all night fixing and installing stuff onto my computer (those windows updates take a while) and was ready for a sleep!

Downloaded some drivers for the Sound Blaster but they didn't work, probably the wrong one. How come I would have to change things with the dvd player when it worked before and all I did was swap the Hard Drives? Genuine question, not trying to be fussy.

Off to have a look at the Dvd player now.

This is the Device status of the two Sound Blaster 16 (which have exclamation marks in yellow circles next to them).

"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system."

Hardware for DVD seems fine, still not working. When running a DVD it says "You must have DVD software installed on your computer to play DVDs."

Where do I get drivers or whatever I need for the hardware?

That is still true, however I managed to re install a C Media AC97 Audio Device so PowerDVD has sound, iTunes has sound, YouTube has sound, logging in and out of Windows I hear the sounds - RealPlayer has sound when doing the videotest.rm but not when playing a DVD (I'm assuming cause it's trying to run off the Sound Blasters).

So half way there, if anyone knows how to fix that Code 12 problem it'll help a lot.

if you already have the onboard sound working, just get rid of the soundblaster 16 card. Physically remove it from the system.

Ahhh Geez! Sorry 'bout that MathsPar. I jumped to the conclusion you weren't able to read anything in your DVD drive. And yes, yours is a good point re: why it (your DVD player) would stop working when it'd worked b4 and you hadn't made any (apparent) changes. I should have asked you what exactly you meant by not working. (Not working w/out further explanation is pretty vague.)

If you have sound and aren't up to tangling w/ this then I suggest you follow PrimeSuspect's recommendation (post #39) and send your SB16 card to the heap. (Then follow the steps in the next post (post #42) detailing how to configure your audio devices.) If you do want to battle this out then I recommend the following...

    Shut your system down...
Remove ALL expansion cards (except video, of course)
    Reboot your computer.
    Now, shut down again.
    Restore JUST the SB16 card.
Boot your computer and get the SB16 card's drivers re-loaded and working again.
Now, one by one add your remaining expansion cards following the same procedure (get the card working properly - check the function of other cards installed then move on to adding another card).
If they're newer cards than your SB16, (and your BIOS is set for auto assigning IRQs) then the newer cards should take IRQs other than the one the SB16 card wants (which is probably IRQ 5)
After adding each one, check the function of your SB16 card...

    ** NOTE **
Don't restore any unnecessary expansion cards to your system. (e.g. Do you really need a modem any more?)
Restore the Firewire card last (IEEE 1394 card)

    EDIT://
What color is the slot your SB16 card is plugged into? (is it brown or white?)

To set AC97 Audio as your default audio:
(You can do the same, of course, for your SB16 audio if you get that working.)

    START button
    CONTROL PANEL
    SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES PROPERTIES
AUDIO TAB: Choose your AC97 audio as the default for ea. device
VOICE TAB: Choose your AC97 audio as the default for ea. device
    Click OK button

Thanks, i'll probably take the sound blaster out in the next few days. The settings were already for default so haven't changed anything.

Noticed Windows Media Player can play the DVD too so this problem is just isolated to RealPlayers ability to play the DVD.

"What do you mean by this? What exactly were the default settings??"

    For this bit here

"To set AC97 Audio as your default audio:

The defaults are already set to the C-Media Wave Device when I checked... although I haven't removed the Sound Blaster Card yet.

    Apologies for the vagueness.
