What are the 2 best cables available and best Wireless Router?

edited January 2007 in Science & Tech
Hi guys,

I am after 2 cables, a modem RJ11 to RJ11 cable from my micro filter to my ADSL Modem/Router and the second cable an Ethernet cable from my PC to my Router.

So would like to know what are the 2 best ones availalbe - I am in the UK so need UK links and prices please :)

And lastly could anyone advise on perhaps what is the best Wireless Router/Modem out at the moment?

Thing is I have a Netgear DG834G v2 for a couple of years now and I dont know what it is but it doesnt seem to be responding well when connecting to the internet and everything is slow I have done everything already and I think its the router, it just takes time to respond as the Internet light flashes sometimes when it decides to function.
When doing webcam chat its now extremely slow worse than dial up and I can no longer send picture messages on Xbox Live :-(

So it looks like I need some new equipment as have checked everything with the ISP and everything is alright on their end.
I have a connection of 7.5mb down and 768k up as per the router status, nothing seems to be working correctly.

So any advice on the new equipment would be very much appreciated.

In terms of Ethernet cable, relative to the Ethernet networking world your DSL is not putting any sort of weight on Ethernet technology....meaning any old CAT5 cable will transmit far more speed than your DSL modem is going to provide. That's not your speed issue.

Maybe some DSL guys reading this can provide more opinions, but I'm also not aware that there is any better quality twisted pair phone cable to connect your modem to the wall. I would also suggest that if there is a problem with the quality of copper serving your DSL modem , you have a lot more to investigate than the cable to the wall.

And lastly could anyone advise on perhaps what is the best Wireless Router/Modem out at the moment?

Again, are you sure your wireless is the problem? What happens if you just plug straight into your computer from the DSL modem? Does that solve the issues? If so, I tend to just buy Linksys. I don't have a lot of trouble with them, but to be honest part of my motivation is to get all my clients on the same brand as it makes it easier to troubleshoot over the phone.

You are asking for advice on issues that might lie outside of the cable modem, and issues on your side of the cable modem. I think you need to isolate where your issue is first.

My router is connected directly to my PC via ethernet, even acessing hotmail takes forever slower than dial up! :-( I am changing to a new ISP this friday and they will supply a new wireless router modem if its a good one and the conversion solves the problem.

Lets see what that brings, but what I was suggesting was to take the router out of the equation completely. Go straight from the DSL modem to your computer. Or are you using the terms "router" and "modem" interchangably because they are the same box?

To me, it would seem your slow speeds are due to settings problems with your hardware or with line speed or feed configurations to your home from your service provider. Have you called and asked a technician for a line test or online modem test?

All tests come back fine from their end, I just dont know what it is its weird, the router shows its connected at 7520kbs down and the router which flashes with the light to tell you it is downloading from the web it thinks about it first i.e. it doesnt flash much or until later.

I have changed the wires and filter, i have a new router modem a wireless one from Bebroadband in the UK and will try this on Friday when my new ISP connects me to their service.

I have changed the wires and filter...

Just checking, you have the filter(s) on the phones, not on the DSL line...right?

Don't know if you've been to this site Super, but very good resources for all things DSL. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq

    Thanks for the info!

My filter has always been on my MAIN phone line socket.

I just took delivery of my new top of the range XF-1E filter and WOW my connection is perfect again! Even after changing the cables and filter this new one did cost around £10 which is around $18 but its the best on the market and has got the top reviews! Its a lot of money for this filter but its awesome!

Interesting. Thanks for getting back to us. I knew there were filters that were "supposed" to help...but didn't know if they made that much difference. Guess it did for you!

Actually the culprit was my Netgear DG834G it was getting old and replaced the router and its working fine.
