Won't POST!

edited October 2003 in Hardware
Hi there

The computer won't POST SOME of the time. It used to work if I reset it a few times after turning it on, but now the problem is worse. For the past 2 weeks, it needs to be on for a few HOURS before I press reset for it to work.
I tried resetting BIOS, installing new psu, and removed all PCI cards and peripherals (mouse, printer, ethernet). Even tried running with just the power cord. It still will not POST. Now, it's been on for a day and a half and resetting no longer works.
Any ideas? ( I will try replacing ram as soon as I get hold of a stick)

The system:
PII 300MHz
128 MB SDRAM
20GB HD

Thanks

Sounds like a dying motherboard to me.

Sounds like a mobo going bad to me too. Look around on the mobo and see if the tops of any of the big capacitors look buldged up or are leaking some brown stuff.

I've just seen 2 KT7-R mobos die from the capacitor problem in the last week.:(

the hd going bad wouldn't make the computer not POST...

    It's the mobo.

Sounds like the thing just wants to die.

Let it go. Just let it go...

I'm not sure if anyone's said this or not yet, but, I'm guessing it's the mobo.;)

I would usually have said the first thing to check would be the PSU, but you did that already so, that's why I didn't. he he.

Anyway... let us now what you end up doing, because I understand your system isn't exactly state of the art anymore, and spare parts will be hard to get hold of. If you need any help locating a suitable replacement mobo or something like that, don't hesitate to post back and ask.

    Cheers
