HOSTS file alternatives?

edited January 2007 in Science & Tech
I have read about using a HOSTS file to prevent adware and ads from popping up or population on web pages. Seems like a good idea. The HOSTS file I saw was at

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/

anybody have an input on this idea and if it really works or is worth it? are there risks?

It really works. :) I have my HOSTS file set to a gigantic list of known spam/junk addresses, and it really cuts down on the bogus websites/advertisements/etc.

I use that HOSTS file at home and at the office. We have DansGuardian in place, but I like the HOSTS as another layer of protection.

I've been using the mvps one for years. I go back and get a new one every now and then. The only drawback is that you often have to hit the "back" button several times as the advertising sites are being blocked. But to me, that's well worth it to know that no matter where I go and click, my computer cannot get to known bad guy sites.

So... does anyone have a good list of addresses that they can HOST file? I have not done anything with my HOST file but would like too.

Kwitko, Thrax... if both of you posted your HOST files, then we could merge them and have a KILLER HOST file!!! Just a thought...

Is there trustworthy websites that list sites for HOST file?

Mine is the MVPS file, not a homemade concoction.
