Vista connectivity bug

I've been using Vista for several days now and everytime I start my computer I don't have internet connectivity (Earthlink cable modem). It's always on. My XP computers of which there are 3 in the house have no trouble connecting so this is a Vista problem. I've managed to get connected after some hoop jumping until this morning. I try the repair and it won't work. Tried to detect networks, won't connect/doesn't see any. Tried typing in my network name manually but it won't allow me to. Checked my lan driver, it's installed and working and the driver is current. Still the problem. This must be a Vista bug. There's no reason for it not to connect.

From some of the wording you used, I take it you're talking about connecting wirelessly? My Vista machine has a hard time finding the wireless network if I bring it out of sleep. I'd say I get your symptoms about 50% of the time when I bring it out of sleep. Since I don't let mine go to sleep that often I've done nothing to diagnose it. I don't know if a service doesn't start up again or what. I always have to reboot when it has happened.

My router is wireless but my Vista machine is plugged in. You are right in that it has tried to connect wirelessly even though I don't have a wireless card in it (2 of my XP machines are on wireless connections). That made no sense to me. Of course, I just walked in from work, fired it up and connected right up  It may be/it seems to be related to Windows Defender settings. The WD systray icon has an exclamation mark and it says it's turned off. I have it checked to be on in the WD control panel itself. I think when it's on is when I have the problem. I think WD still has issues to be worked out. Heck... I don't know if it's off or on as I am getting mixed signals from it.

Gonna shutdown now to install new dvdrw. Who knows if it will come back on.

It's Windows Live OneCare that keeps shutting me down. I'm going back to AVG, Adaware and Spybot. Gonna remove WLOC as soon as I can find 'Add/Remove Programs'.

Weedo, this might simply be a not-quite compatible Vista driver for your wireless adapter. I've had similar problems with XP drivers for 'buggy' USB wireless adapters. I have one XP machine now, that every time I reboot I have to perform a "repair" with the wireless local area connection. (right click on connection icon) See if you can run the device in compatibility mode for XP. (I haven't used or even seen Vista, so it may not be that simple.)

I think you missed it Leonardo....his Vista machine doesn't have a wireless card.

But, I am interested in your comments about having to do a repair when you boot up your XP machine. Often when I bring up my ThinkPad, the little yellow ball goes back and forth and the bubble tells me it's acquiring an IP address. Meanwhile I'm browsing the web and ipconfig tells me I've got a 192. The only way to stop the "acquiring address" stuff is to do a release/renew.

Are those your symptoms? I don't even have WZC turned on by the way. I'm just using the IBM wireless utility.

I don't have a wireless adapter installed. I'm running on the built in lan on my mobo using whatever driver came with Vista. Perhaps that driver is the problem though. When I perform the repair it doens't seem to work, then magically connects at a later time.

I uninstalled WLOC because it took too many liberties and was changing my settings everytime I did something. Even at that I rebooted to a lack of connectivity which just corrected itself when I wasn't even on my computer.

Leonardo's got a point about drivers. PCI Ethernet cards are pretty cheap. If there's no new Vista driver for your onboard, I think that's worth a shot......

There was a Vista Lan driver on the Asrock website for my board. I installed it so we'll see. That seems to have taken care of the problem. Thanks for the input.
