Combo Drive Prob

Got my new machine up and running, but the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive is acting up. It will play commercial CDs and DVDs, but not burned CDs--not even my purchased drum loops. Sometimes it won't play anything unless I reboot.
New firmware has been suggested, but Sony (CRX320EE) doesn't list any. It is recognised in the bios and Hardware manager, and un-re-installing the driver didn't change anything (this machine is not connected to the net)
Any ideas?

Have you tried more than one brand of recordable media? Sometimes some brands of media (at least with CDs) just aren't compatible. Well, you said sometimes it just won't work right at all. Try swapping out the IDE cable and/or the audio signal cable. Also, is the drive's jumper set to Cable Select?
