There are several methods to backup Outlook Express.

    Address book...
    1. Open Outlook Express
    2. Click on the "Tools" menu
    3. Click on "Address Book..."
    4. When the Address Book opens, click on "File"
    5. Click on Export
    6. Click on "Address Book (WAB)..."
    7. Select an directory to save your address and name it something (Backup.wab)
    8. A window will pop up when your address has been exported. DONE
Mail Messages... (This is a bit more complex)
    1. Close Outlook Express
    2. Click on "My Computer"
    3. Click on the "Tools" menu
    4. Click on "Folder Options"
    5. Click on "View"
    6. Make sure the following check boxes are checked...
      • "Display the contents of system folders"
      • "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
    7. Make sure "Hide protected operating systems files" is NOT checked...
    8. Click OK
    9. Navigate to this directory
      "c:\documents and settings\(YOUR USERNAME)\Local Settings\
      Application Data\Identities\
      {7AF0DAC1-A887-491A-A806-89B3CA6FA2A9}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
    10. Copy everything int his directory to some other location.
    11. Repeat Steps 2 through 7 but do the opposite to hide system files.
OK... that backs up the address book and the local stored email messages.

Don't forget your email account settings as well...

    Email Account Settings
    1. Launch Express
    2. Tools Menu
    3. Accounts...
    4. Mail Tab
    5. Highlight Email Address
    6. Push EXPORT button
    7. Save to your My Documents Directory
    8. Repeat for any other Email Address

To import your account settings do the above, except select the IMPORT button and select the *.iaf file in your My Documents Directory.

99% of the time the accounts will import, other times it will give an error. Then you will need to put the account back by hand.

Here's something a few people I know have found handy in this sort of situation:
