LinkSys WRT54G acting flaky

I have a LinkSys WRT54G router that started flaking out today. Possibly not related, but my wife said they lost internet connectivity after the power went off for a few seconds. I couldn't connect to the router until I powered it off and back on. It worked okay for about 15 minutes and dropped off again. All the lights flash on at once, then it goes back to normal appearance. It repeats this over and over.

I went to town and picked up a new WRT54G that doesn't look like the old one (fewer lights on the front) but it's working fine. That was $50 I didn't plan to spend, but it's better than listening to my mother-in-law complain about not being able to play on Pogo. :)

Anyway, I know this a popular router and wondered if anyone here has had a similar problem with theirs and if there might be a simple 'fix'?

You could try re-flashing it and see how it goes. If that doesn't work, I turned my bricked router into a storage compartment for items. :)

I considered trying a firware upgrade, but I don't know if it will stay connected long enough to upgrade. I guess I should try resetting it first and then go from there. I might take it to work tomorrow and play around with it.

Was it on a surge suppressor? Sounds like that power outage may have ended with a power surge.

No sir and I should be taken out and shot for that whether it caused it or not. :)

I've saved a few of those Linksys bricks with this proceedure. It can get a new firmware into it even when you can't get in through the html page.

Don't know what to tell you about your mother-in-law. You're on your own with that one.

Thanks for that link mtrox. :) I might give that a shot and see what happens.

I've already purchased and installed a new one, so no hurry or big deal if this one can't be revived. My mother-in-law is happy....lol.

I reset it, installed new firmware and so far it's working. I hooked up two PCs to it at work when I left with one pinging the other so we'll see if it's still pinging when I get to work tomorrow morning.

I had to select a version on the LinkSys website, but this router does not have a version number on it. I guess it's pre-version 1.0, but that's the one I selected to get the firmware.
