About Folding@home
.pdf release
While a little more informative than previous announcements, the client is still not released and a date was not specified. However, things are beginning to loosen up at FAH.
Folders on these machines are notified that they will need 200MB on their disk to install the client. My understanding is that this will mostly be for software that will enable the PS3 system to run the client.
While Sony claims that the PS3 processor should be able to perform 10 times faster than a standard PC processor, project leader Vijay Pande is quoted as saying, “For certain WU types, the PS3 is 20x the speed of a typical PC. It's very, very fast.”
Couple that with a percentage of more than a million units distributed to date, the project should enjoy a huge gain in processing power.
I don't think 1 Milliion PS3 owners will be jumping in on this. Call me skeptic, but they don't even have huge numbers of GPU's folding yet...
As usual, I'm one of the last to know...:o
Edit: Posted
The key difference between this and the GPU client is that it will be ready to go when people get their next PS3 software update. People don't need to be in the loop to know about it, it'll appear on their XMB menu. If Sony's estimations on the Cell's folding power are correct, then if just 1% of current North American PS3 owners use the client, the total project input could increase by 50%.
I don't know if 1% of current NA owners will do it, but consider that there are also Japanese owners, there's about to be European owners, and there will be more PS3s sold over the following years. I think this client could make a huge impact.
