Checkdisk at Startup?

edited March 2007 in Science & Tech
Almost everytime I boot into XP, I get a message about needs to run checkdisk unless I press a key within 10-secs. If I let it run it never finds any problems. How do I get rid of this thing!?

This is often the sign of a failing hard drive. Run the tests from the hard drive manufacturer. Do both the Quick and the Full tests.

Been getting this message for about a year now, no failures so far! Both drives I have are WD PATA drives and pass the WD Smart checks. Only ran the quick check as the extended version said it could take hours.

Have you run the full Checkdisk with both boxes checks in the Checkdisk start window ("Automatically fix...errors" and "Scan for...bad sectors")? If you had ever started a Checkdisk operation but did not let it complete, that could account for Windows attempting to continue/restart that operation, even a year after the fact.

I've let it complete numerous times during the startup routine, completes with no errors, but comes back. Used to use CHKDSK all the time in DOS mode, where do you find it in XP? In the "right-click" menu on the drive?

Yes, right click on the drive - properties - tools - Check Now. Tick both boxes for thorough check. For C:\, you will need to reboot the computer.
