Cannot Add or Change Account Password

I am trying to password protect accounts on my home computers, but Windows will not allow me to change or even add password for individual accounts. Here's the strange part - I never set passwords on any of my Windows accounts. Each computer has but one account, named, and each account has administrator privileges.

Under User Accounts, when I try to change an account password or change an account password, I get a pop up window that reads "The password you typed is incorrect. Please retype your current password." I leave the top field - Type your current password:, blank, as I never have installed a password.

For adding a password, there were only two fields available - password entry and password confirmation. This would not allow a password entry either!

What gives? How do I fix this?

In WinXP - If you use the option to remove password - it will do so (read the pop-up before confirming though).
You can then set a new password, for the account. :)

Really weird - three of the computers with the problem continually indicated 'not allowed' but all three did set the password.

A fourth computer has the password installed but does not require me to enter the password to enter my account or Windows. Interesting, because I do have the blocks in User Accounts set to "Use the Welcome Screen" and "Use Fast User Switching."
