About to attempt the triple boot

Well, since I got my 160 gig drive from authority action sooner than expected I decided to get started early. Right now I am performing the juggle of data to get all lined up.

at first I had everything on a 250 gig SATA drive.
So now I moved all my data from the 250 --> 160
Next I have to install windows on a 4gig IDE drive
Then I will format the 250 and move the data 160-->250

Then is where it might get hairy. I am going to try to tripple boot XP Pro/OSX/Linux. So the easy part will be creating the partitions and installing windows. Then we will see how the OSx install goes. And I don't know how me running an AMD processor will effect the install. My fingers are crossed, but I'm still at least 4 hours away from that. So I'll see you all in an hour or so when I get windows booting form the 4 gig and I format the 250.

Also, what linux distro do you think I should go with? I want a distro that has a big userbase, but is also 'moddable' It won't be my main OS, so a learning curve won't matter. I've heard slackware from some and gentoo from others. So I still haven't decided that, but it will be the last OS that I install.

ta ta.

Ok, after some messing around I'm on a new windows install. Except I'm installed on a 10gig partition of a 60 gig drive because I think my 4gig drive finally died.:sad2:

Took longer than expected, but I'm on my way. Now I just need to track down the drivers for my SATA drive so that I can move that data back from the 160 to the 250. Seems like I'm playing musical hard drives.

Mac OSX? I'm confused. I did not know it could run under any configuration on an "Intel" machine. I am I missing something here?

Well, that's what I'm aiming to find out. I'm still where I was a couple of hours ago because of a small snafu, and I'm having trouble getting windows to see my SATA drive...which is peeving me just a little. but now I have xp reinstalled for the 2nd time.

Ok. Finally got the SATA drive to show up after some arm twisting. Files are copying now, but that's going to take 76 minutes, so I'm going to bed, and I will (hopefully) finish this tomorrow without a whole lot more problems. All I have to do now is format the 160, and reinstall to a 50ish Gb partition. Osx and Linux will each have their own 50gig partition too. OSx is what I'm holding my breath about, but if I've done my research, it should be smooth sailing.

There are hacked copies of OS X that allow you to install on a non-Apple x86/AMD64 machine, though driver support is very slim. The stock copy of OS X will install not allow you to install it on a non-Apple machine period.

Well, I got all the way through the installation, then on reboot it gets to the boot loader with the spinning gray circle thingy, then about 30 seconds into that a gray circle with a line through it appears. Looks like a no smoking sign except it's gray, and does'nt have a ciggy in the background. I'll tell you what though, that is one of the slowest install processes I've ever seen, you're talking an hour and a half minimum.

I've toyed around with OSX86 back in the day. It isn't too much trouble but the drivers are the main issue.

I could never get it to recognize my SATA drive, that was the main issue. And even though I had a supposedly "supported" video card I could never get it to crank out the widescreen resolution I needed.

In the end it was fun to toy around for a bit, but got old. You'd be better off investing your time toying with linux, at least you can actually learn something from that experience.

yeh, I'm gonna try a reinstall this evening and see if I can get it, otherwise I'm just gonna split the drive 50/50 to dual boot linux.
