Interesting Essay Answer

I'm grading the Final Exam for this month's computer class, and I came across an opinion in one of the essays that I thought I would share.

One of the Essay questions was asking to student to discuss the potention positive and negative impact of video games on society and individuals. (We spent hours talking about video games and society in class, so they all should have a good understanding of the issue.)

Withing this Essay, one of my students suggested that it should be illegal for a game to be published which potentially has no ending, that every game should be required to have a 'goal' which can be eventually met, and end the game for the player. Or, at the least, games without such goals should be automatically rated mature due to the negative effects of these games on children and teenagers.

She didn't get this idea directly from class (though we did talk about the occasional case of people who have harmed themselves by playing a non-ending game in an obsessive manner), and I've never heard it before, so I thought I'd share it.

Note: I'm not saying that I agree (or disagree) with the idae... Just that I think it's interesting. Especially since it came from a student who entered the class with no computer knowledge.

    I hope you didn't reward her with an A or B :)

Her idea is way over the top and doesn't make much sense :)

I'm no gamer by the way and only occasionally play some playstation 2 games for fun with friends

Don't look at liberal arts colleges, okay? ;D

I agree it's an interesting idea and well suited for an academic essay: unique perspective and wholly implausible, haha.

I'd go along with that. I wasn't knocking the question, btw, just that one particular answer. :)

The philosophy behind it, ground to its basic logic is: Anything that has even the slightest risk of an ill effect should be banned. But, I assume that's not what she meant, unless she's a shallow thinker.

But then, maybe she'll end up being a lawyer in California that gets a law passed so that cables have warning labels so people won't eat them! Ah, she may have a lucrative future as a tort lawyer.

Sort of like the extreme second-hand smoke crusaders who will wail endlessly about a little tobacco smoke but who won't hesitate to sit directly behind 10 thousand automobile tailpipes on the drive to the mall.
