Sorry if I missed it, but have you run the manufacturer's tests on the HD?
no, But it was the hard drive I had working in another pc and I took it out
to use in this one cause it wouldn't load with the 160 gig so I put the 160 gig in the 1st pc and put the small one in the 2nd and the 2nd found it and formatted it and loaded ubunutu onto it.
But like I said it wouldn't take the 160 gig and the 1st pc took the 160 gig with n/p
so I left it that one.
But if I need I can try the manufacturer's tests on the HD.
But have to find the test, manufacturer is a Fujitsu.
Ok clutching at straws now
What power supply are you using 300w 400w higher / lower?
Could the CPU be over heating - does it have a big enough heatsink & fan?
Did you format (fully) or quick format HD before trying to install OS?
Did you fdisk/mbr the HD - sometimes an old mbr can prevent a new install.

Still thinking
Power suppy 475w CPU temps fine and I'm using a Thermaltake which is more than enough.(it's the biggest heat sink and fan that I have most are just the stock type)
I repartition it and formatted it before ubuntu went on(the cd came with tools)
So I'm thinking I should be good there. But Thanks Kentigern
profdlp I'll check out that site and tell you what I find out, Now this may have to wait till the weekend before I get to it.
Unless it rains than I'll be on the pc all day
