Ok guys I'm stuck
I got a machine together and booting seem to be a problem.
It does the first screen
detecting pri. master and all that.
But, if says floppy disk(s) fail (40) I mean it should there is no floppy disk.
I didn't put one in than it says press F1 to continue,Del to set up
and under that the motherboard make.
So I do the F1 and the second screen
Diskette drive a : 1.44m, 3.5 in.
Diskette drive b : none
Pir. Master disk : 8455MB, UDMA 2
Pir . slave disk : None
Sec. Master disk : CD-ROM, Mode 4
Sec. slave : None
Serials Port(s) : 3f8 2f8
Parallel port(s) : 378
DRAM Type : DDR SDRAM
DRAM Mode : 64-BIT
Frame Buffer Size :32MB
SPD On Module(s) : Yes

Ok if I have to put all this in tell
me I will.
At the bottem of the screen the cursor just sets flashes
But now you know where I'm at and stuck.
Give me something to try

 Go into the bios on the general page there should be a setting for the floppy drive(s), e.g.
    floppy 3.5" 1.4mb

Select it and press enter you should be able to disable the floppy drive(s) now.
If floppy seek is turned on, turn off.

If the above is not available, then look for the HALT ON ALL ERRORS setting and change it to keyboard only.

    Hope this helps :)

ok floppy is disable, I did that when I didn't put it in so I knew not to try to let it boot from there.where do I find HALT ON ALL ERRORS to change it to only keyboard?

I have mine set to Halt on none, otherwise it throws a fit sometimes. I'm not exactly sure where yours is, but mine is in the general bios settings.

My guess is that you have the Floppy Controller disabled, but it's still showing a non-existent drive in the hardware settings. They are two different things.

Can you set the floppy drive type to "None"?

ok it's not reporting the floppy but it's not going any farther than what it was

ok set to none now it says update ESCD Successfully but still just blinks and that's all the farther it goes

Did you do that? Some BIOS will halt on anything that is not interpreted as standard.

Just another little thought or two :)

In most BIOS you can set a switch to refresh/delete the ESCD info.

Clearing that ESCD again might get you further.

Is it possible that you have entered a duff setting in the bios...

You could try to reset your BIOS to default or optimal values.

Ok, After changing hard drives and cd rom I got ubuntu to load on the hard drive and it will boot into ubuntu.
But when I try for up dates or surf the web it freeze.
When I try to put a window cd in to get it to load windows ubuntu won't let it and when I try to boot from a window cd it errors.
I wounldn't mind keeping ubuntu but the freezing will have to stop and I will need to to be able to surf.
Oh it boots from the hard drive to ubuntu there is no cd in the cd rom

Ok this is now where I'm at it will boot from the hard drive OS is ubuntu but it freezes after a minute or two.
Does the same thing when I try ubuntu live running from cd rom.( freezes)
The only parts I added was the power supply, cd rom, 1gig of ram and hard drive. no exspandion toys
The hard drive is a 4 gig when I try the 160 gig hard drive I'm back to the top of this thread.
I've tried pulling one stick of ram and no change it still freezes.
Tried to reboot with a window disc and no dice back to the top of this thread tried to open the window disc in ubuntu and ubuntu won't let it.
Tried to boot with UBCD and nope that's not going to happen back to the top this thread.

    :scratch::confused: :shakehead :scratch::nudge::scratch: :hitit2: :grr::scratch::grumble: :hitit2: :scratch:
    still nothing changed

Do you have another power supply you can use/try?

Have you tried disconnecting the cdrom altogether - could be faulty/wrong mode.

Could you have accidently knocked the cpu when you put in the power supply

Power supply I can see if I can get another one But this is the only one on hand

disconnect the cdrom I can try that

accidentally knocked the cpu when you put in the power supply that's not likely
the power supply plugs in by the ide cables

Just another little idea - try setting jumpers to cable select on both devices and setting the bios for these devices to auto select.

Also check ide cables for any kinks/frays etc.

    :)

Yes AA checked them before shipping and one is being used as
    a slave with n/p.
But I was using ubuntu live which is ran off the cd rom and it don't matter about the hard drive, and it still freezes.
So any idea I'll try and the 4 gig hard drive is big enough it's only a folding machine.

    Ok here's what memtest86 says
    Amd Athlon(0.18) 902.1 MHz
    L-1: Cache:128k 5534MB/s
    L-2: Cache:256k 1574MB/s
    Memory 479m 367MB/s
    Chipset: nVidia nForce

    WallTime : 00:44:23
    Cached : 479
    RsvdMem: 140k
    MemMap: e820-std
    Cache: on
    ECC: off
    Test: Std
    Pass: 1
    Errors ECC Errs: 0

I left the memtest86 v1.65 running on it and the walltime is now 00:59:21
    and still no errors.
Yeah, I still lost But still trying to get it to go.

IDE cables new, I bought use power supply, ram, processor second hand
CD rom, motherboard and 4 gig hard drive I had.
But the memtest did three tests and no errors by the end the memtest
took like a hour and a half.
It didn't freeze during the test,But the thing won't boot off the UBCD or a
windows cd. It did boot and load ubuntu to the hard drive, but freezes after
booting into ubuntu from the hard drive and when I try to run ubuntu live it will
freeze too. Both ways it will freeze after like two minutes.
Oh it did boot into the memtest off the ubuntu cd and it format the hard drive
from the ubuntu cd before loading ubuntu.
