anyone with Arctic Silver 5 results

edited November 2003 in Hardware
It's lowered temps 3C on all my AMD systems. Some use SK/SLK and some use retail alu sinks. All were thoroughly cleaned but not lapped. I'm going to save lapping for future upgrades. On diode readings it dropped 2C on first day.

Finally a good product from this company.

while you are thinking about ways to drop your temps this is a nice enlightening read.

I skimmed thru the 1st post in that thread... I think the guy has his specs wrong (altho I'd have to see a pic to be sure)... squirrel cage (blower) fans push very little air at very high static pressures and very high noise outputs compared to standard axial fans. The BIG blowers (like the 11" one Comair-Rotron has...) push a ton of air (1000CFM anyone?) and can still push a ton of air at high static pressures, such as when attached to a heatsink. However, my guess is that if these blowers will fit on an 80mm fan frame, they simply CANNOT be pushing more than 10-30cfm apiece. Admittedly, an (estimated) 60cfm isn't anything to sneeze at, but it's nothing like the 400-odd or whatever it was CFM he mentioned. But he may be using something different, so I don't know. It just doesn't seem likely that he's pushing that much air through any squirrel cage fan that can be mounted on an 80mm fan.

Yeah, I just looked. On page 4, he's got a pic of the two blowers outlets... the impellers don't look to be more than 1/2"-1" wide... unless these blowers are like 10" in diameter or something, they aren't going to be pushing much more than 20cfm each I don't think.

if you don't skim and read then you will see they find out that it's a 25cfm blower but because of the pressure it feels powerful. And only 50cfm of higher pressure flow drops his temps 6C compared to 119cfm of lower pressure flow from a vantec tornado.

Allectrontics has them for 6.50 peice

yeah, that doesn't surprise me. Heatsinks with high density fins such as the SLKs benefit a lot from high static pressure.

    Mmm... Turbo Blower.
For those that don't want to skim the thread, here's a picture :)

going by that pic he could just remove that TT2 fan and let the blower suck air directly from outside - another 1 or 2 C drop.

A nice piece of 4" ducting running from overtop of the blowers to the rear exhaust ports would help cool the CPU even more.

First, he would have to mod the case so that the rear exhaust fans are removed and he could affix the ducting to draw air directly through the case (ie cut a 4" hole). Would be neat to see. :)

where did he get that blower from? (sorry i didnt read the thread, so does that really help in performance?

Dunno where he got his, jengo, but if you want to do it, there are a number of places to go:

well I got the same blower as that guy but completely opposite results. Temps went up 8C at idle. The pressure of these blowers don't seem to be greater than a TT2 fan and I would bet money that it's less than a Tornado fan like he has. So if you can find a blower fan that really has a lot of pressure then go for it but these models aren't the ones. :(

I have never seen any of those type push very much air, so I actually see it as counterproductive.

lowered temps 3c from what? what were you using as reference?

ah ...I'm using AS2 ...perhaps I should get AS5 ...I wonder why so much difference?

    "The compound

The polysynthetic suspension fluid in Arctic Silver 5 is improved. A new mix of non-silicone synthetic oils has proven more stable than that of Arctic Silver 3, further improving the long-term performance of Arctic Silver 5, especially under high-vibration or other difficult conditions.

The average particle size is reduced to less than 0.45 microns (<0.000018 inch). These microscopic, thermally conductive particles in Arctic Silver 5 fill the voids between the core and the heatsink more effectively than previously, to provide improved thermal transfer.

The compound is more dense. The sizes of the individual filler particles are designed so that the smaller particles better fill the interstices between the larger particles than with our previous compounds. While most thermal compounds contain 30% to 50% thermally conductive filler by weight, Arctic Silver 5 contains almost 90%.

The application is easier. Like Ceramique, Arctic Silver 5 is not to be spread out on the P4 heat spreader. A small dab of AS5 is placed on the center of the heat spreader, and the pressure from the heatsink spreads it out to form an air-free minimum bond line.

Thanks for that link. I was going to wait till I finished up my AS3 but will order some right now.
