Generic Host Process for Win32 Services

edited April 2007 in Science & Tech
Hi all.

Everytime I start my PC, I get a error message saying that:
The instruction in "0x745f2780" refered to address "0x00000000". Memory could not be "read". Click OK to exit program, cancel to debug.

If i click OK, I cannot start any programs, so the PC is useless. If I click cancel, I get a bluescreen for half a second and the PC restarts. If I don't click anything, I can use the PC as normal, but the error-message is still there.

I can click "more info" and get this;
szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : msi.dll
szModVer : 3.1.4000.2435 offset : 00012780
and I can click "more info" again, and get this;
C:\DOCUME~1\Ronnie\LOKALE~1\Temp\WERbd1b.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Ronnie\LOKALE~1\Temp\WERbd1b.dir00\appcompat.txt
The file svchost.exe.mdmp is zero byte, I opened it in notepad, and it's blank.

I have installed the hotfix WindowsXP-KB894391-x86-NOR.exe (I have norwegian language on XP, therefore "NOR") but that did not help.

Here is the HJT log:

    Ron, I scanned your HJT log and nothing struck me as nasty, but I'm not an expert in that area. You may be having a hardware problem, namely RAM. I'd give Memtest a try and see if it reveals any memory errors.

    Go to this page for the link to download Memtest.

    Thanks, but how should i use memtest? I understand I have to burn a bootable cd (I have a laptop so floppy is not an option). But I dont understand too much of the commands.. any tips?

    No need for memtest.. I turned automatic updates off, and then the message disappeared.

    Thanks for the help anyway!

    Thanks for reporting back the solution to the problem. I'm sure that will be valuable information for someone else with the same problem. :)
