Company of Heroes Hates my System

Ok, I think its time too refer to the experts on this one. I’ve recently started playing Company of hero’s and its and excellent game, but last night it suddenly froze and after a lot of LOUD expletives (it took me ages to get to where I was) I reluctantly restarted the system, restarted the game and was greeted with a blank black screen, so, I used good ol ctrl + alt + del, culled off the game, restarted and same again. After doing this over and over again for a while, I thought Id take a look under the hood, perhaps my memory timings where still a little on the hope full side, (has caused problems earlier with crashing programs) but still no luck, then realisation of a horrible possibility. Could my beloved graphics card be dieing? It shouldn’t I told myself but I had to check (their worth over $1000 over here so I WANTED to know) but after a rousing session of N.F.S Most Wanted with all settings at max, it seemed ok. So now I refer to the knowledge base that is short media. Can you help me in my woes?

First off I can see your system is to the right specs... so the next question is, have you updated CoH recently? have you updated your graphics drivers recently? how long have you been playing the game? was this the first time?

Ok, I currently dont Have the internet @ home (Im kinda writing this on the boss' dime:bigggrin: ) but thanks to a charitable friend I have the updated drivers for the GPU been playin the game for about a week and a half or more and this is the first time its died to this extent. Previously its just kacked it's self and after a restart everythings OK. Now Im starting to get the odd artifact onscreen (even during the 'flashy add screens' as the game loads) and lastnight was the first time the system locked up before the game fully loaded...

I was having a lot of problems with this game on my old pc. It seemed like no matter what I did something would go wrong with it. After much frustration I gave up on trying to play it. When I upgraded the Video card it fixed it. Even though I had a video card that should have been able to run it with flying colors, it just didn't seem to like that video card. So maybe it's not your whole computer it hates. Try a friends vid card or something. Now that I've upgraded the whole system it doesn't hate me or my computer anymore.

So you're getting artifacts with your 8800's? can you play any other games without any problems?

ya, can play EVERYTHING with no problems, thats whay I started panicking when I saw stuff happening that shouldnt, I mean the damn thing almost cost me half a months pay and I thought it had died. but after thrashing it on NFS Most Wanted there was no issue.

as a side note I was watching a DVD last night and the system locked again, but after a hard reset it was fine.

startin to get a little iffy as the the number of times Im having to press the reset button I know it doesnt do any MAJOR damage to the system, but I dont think it should be locking up this much...

I have been doing massive research on this, and I haven't found any other reports about the 8800 that match your issue.

How is the air flow in the case? also CoH is one of the most graphically intense games on the market currently... at least I know it is more harsh on the GPU than NFS.

can you tell us what temp the cards are running at?

Also what Driver are you running for the 8800's?

Ill have a look @ the temp tonight but theres one issue, how do I check? The Temps shouldnt be too much of a problem though as theres a fan drawing air from outside the case onto the inlet for the GPU and another drawing air onto the underside of the card and to the inlet of the HSF... Ill try get a sketch of the cooling setup (or pix) listed tonight as well.

Last time I saw something resembling this my PSU was overloaded and starting to crap out. I only saw it on one game then too (HL2).

the main thing is hold your hand int he back of the system and if it is blowing hot air that feels to hot, the circulation might be bad in the case...

Ok, so I stuck my hand both at the back of the case and over the blow hole in the top, its warm, but I wouldnt call it HOT...

I dont know if this is related, but Ive been trying to play DVD's on the system and it keeps freezing (we're talkin complete system lock) about 30 secs into the DVD playing... any ideas?

Ok time for an update, So after a couple of months of fiddling, a bad bios update and subsiquent new motherboard, and a friend of mine reformatting the computer :sad2: I finally got the graphics sorted... Via RMA of the graphics card...

Thanks to all those who had suggestions toward the problem.
