You just took a very sharp step backwards in speed, features, and future support for Intel CPUs. That board runs an ancient chipset.
If I got the link right Thrax that is the new G33 chipset with integrated Video. I was fairly sure the G33 was just released about the same time as P35?
Yes, it should be just fine, the new G33 is a nice chipset. Its not going to be a major overclocker, but I don't think you were really worried about that?
Yeah not really, I'm wanting a fast PC which is half decent for games and movies. I know of overclocking but haven't tried it myself yet, will probably fiddle with it when I have some free time and like to learn new things.
Have my 4th year of University coming up though so will be quite busy with studying.
Lol I like the "Icrontic Duke of Haxor" bit under my name now, I hope people never get the impression I know anything on this cause most of my 100+ posts have actually been nit picky questions lol.
Have decided not to get a Quad Core as I think it might be overkill. Basically my ideal PC would be one that could run Vista, have Football Manager playing in the background, iTunes playing at the same time, Microsoft Word and Excel open to do Uni work and with a few internet browsers open at the same time - with no slow down. Since on this PC I'm on a Pentium 4 I thought I would have to buy an amazing processor cause this one is so slow but some people have advised my that the Intel Core 2 Duo shouldn't be underestimated.
And it should shave about £60 off of the total price.

A Core 2 Duo should do exactly what you want it to, as described in two posts above. If it were only a 10-15 Pound difference, I'd go with the quad core. If the difference is really 60 pounds, then yes, the dual core makes a lot of sense.
It's a good thing I've been tweaking the list all summer cause the first one came to a total of £617 but now it's at £371. A nice £246 saved lol. I'll wait another week to see if any deals crop up on Scans 1 day only section then I'll begin ordering all the components as I'm really happy with the parts at that price.

I think you'll have a machine that will serve you well and that will still "feel" fast a couple years from now.
This is mainly me thinking out loud but if anyone spots any compatibility problems please tell me. My friend says I wont need any extra fans or anything as the Case fans should suffice apparently.
I should be able to find an XP disc lying about the house somewhere, might resort to OpenOffice for the time being unless I can find a cheap way of getting Word and Excel. I have 1 year of University left so not sure how that works with the Student deals, I think most packages ask you to register your student details so would that mean it stops working after my final year?
So far ordered the DVD drive, case and x1950pro. Unfortunately the GPU cost £8 more for delivery but managed to get free delivery on the case and DVD drive. If I can persuade my dad tomorrow to forward me some money I should have everything by middle of next week then the fun begins!
For £175 in a bundle, only £5 more than the original 2 I was going to pick. Anyway, everything ordered, I'll start a new thread for problems with the build next week lol.

Oh no! That DRAM is incompatible with your selected motherboard!
Okay I've cancelled the RAM and Intel combo. Which kind of RAM should I get?

Uh, MathsPar, I was joking; it was in jest. At the bottom of my post in small script it reads, "just joking." I am sorry if you canceled a perfectly legitimate order. If you are just pulling my leg, then the joke is now on me.
"If you were to put 1 gigabyte of RAM in your PC, it's best to use dual channel 512MBx2 sticks. Put the first 512MB stick in slot 1, and put the 2nd stick in slot 3 (the two slots that are blue) - leaving slot 2 empty. This will give you better performance, vs. putting 1GB in slot 1, or two 512MB sticks in slot 1 and 2."
Would the same principle apply for using my 2x1GB RAM? Placing them in slots 1 and 3 instead of 1 and 2?

Yes, I think all motherboards require populating 1-3 or 2-4 for dual channel operation. The 512MB in the article was merely an example.
Motherboard manual?
I don't mind helping you at all. I enjoy it. But for your sake, you would have a better understanding of the motherboard and it's options if you read the manual (assuming you have one).
Yeah definitely, all the parts aren't arriving til midweek though so thought I'd read some instructions beforehand to be more prepared. Lol what a sad way to spend a Sunday afternoon though!
I appreciate your help and all the others who have contributed to this thread, helps fill in large gaps in my knowledge.

No problem, and I apologize for implying you wouldn't read your manual. Well, at this point, you certainly can't!
Came to an agreement with my parents that they could have my old 15'' flat screen monitor and the remains of my old pc for £100 so I could buy a new monitor too.
Got it for £113 on the today only deal. It does what I need, unlike my old monitor I will be able to hook up my Xbox 360 to this at the same time as my PC theoretically and it has quite good contrast ratio for that price.
Also wanted to see what having a widescreen monitor would be like.

g33 is nice, but I hate all the onboard crap :\
Found the RAM £1 cheaper than before lol.
So that Motherboard I picked was fine?
