Drive differences and RAID

Before reading this post, please read this

I have the AVVN edition already, and I got a good deal on another 40gb, unfortunately it is the AVVA.

Will they still work well in RAID? They are the same drive, and same specs, just with different platters I think.

Thanks in advance for any help, it's appreciated

Back in the day, the day of the KT7-RAID, I got a RAID to work with a 40 gig WD and a 40 gig IBM, and it worked ok.

The general consensus is though, that the drives should be identical.

The whole point of going with a raid 0 array is speed. Therefore, to get the most speed out of the array, both drives should be identical, as the process of splitting the data between the two drives will be more efficient if they are the same. If seek times and access times differ between the two drives, as they do in this case according to the article you linked to, your array won't be as efficient as it could. How much you care and the point of it all is up to you. However, I believe the processing of the data will take a much bigger processor overhead on non-identical drives and then defeat the whole purpose of the raid 0.

    My $.02.

IMHO, the difference between these two drives is so minimal that it should work just fine.

But, then again, EQ's probably right!

    Thanks guys, for your comments.

If you read the article you might notice that they are not the same speed, the AVVA is usually faster in seek and transfer.

I think the only physicaly difference is the number of platters?

If I'm not mistaken, according to the chart they both have one platter.

Edit: Nevermind, I guess you're right.

The 120GB has 3 but yours (40GB) has only one according to the chart.
