WD screwed me in a RMA.

edited July 2003 in Hardware
I bought two WD SE 120gigs with two platters retail for a raid zero setup. One was bad ,sent it back to WD for replacement, got back one year old refurbished drive with three platters-I lose auto one year on my war now and have a mismatched peice of junk- got it today. Will the three platter 120gig wd se work well with a two platter faster model in raid zero or just realy screw up my speed and drive failure is increase quite a bit. I am now screwed on my raid array, and it's all Cheapo WD cost cutting-customer do not care policy, make as much as posible off my back. I am going to fix them good in a year and a half and RMA both of them.:mad::mad::mad:

Contact them and demand a new one, and basically keep harassing them until they do something. I wouldnt settle for that.

Have you explained to them that you need identical drives for your RAID?

Drives need to be as close as possible, speed and size.

You need identical drives ! It may work with what you have but
for best performance they must be exactly alike.

Problem is fixed, but WD was no help, the store took back the dud. Now I have two platter drives new. They should raid quite well and last a long time. I am using quatums 10giggers in a raid zero that has gone on for two years and are a perfect match. This is where all the problems that are coming from raiding these drives. A two platter version is much different than a three platter version-they do not raid good together and failure rate is high. But with two very close drives, the failure rate is not much more than running one drive and the drives will be very fast in running them.;)

Were the maxtors a matched pair?

When running a raid zero, you have to back up data, if you do that at least if it blows up, you will have the important data saved.

I disconnect the drive when I do that.

I am backing up all my data and installing my new drive, this weekend ,should be fun it's a lot of work. I have a maxtor tank 5400rpm for backup 40gigs. I bet these matched Wd's 120 60+gigs two platters are very fast and cool running, not as noisy either. I have not even seen a review on them, only the slower three platter 40gig models have info written on them, I am using latest 272 highpoint on board raid chip with highpoint bios 2.34-a bios hack with matching driver's. I believe these drives should be very close to the larger WD drives which are much more money. I got these WD very cheap with one hundred dollar rebate's, less than $200 a great deal, now that I have the fastest model out. So I have my finger's crossed. I do not think I have much to worry about.:rolleyes::D :o

I am not going to post on this threat any more because problem is solved. Store took back dud and I made $21 because the price dropped. Today is the big WD 120giger SE 8mb brand new both latest model two platter versions. I am raiding the bugger's and will start a new thread on how to get the most speed put of these very fast drives. They are the fastest 7200 ide 120gig drives out , so I am bound to really pick up speed and love that huge 240gig space.:) :):):):):):):):):):):)
