My brother is starting project work in visual basic, so he needs a windows box. He hasnt got much money, so I offered him some spare bits i have lying arround.

Abit KT7-RAID
Tbird 1GHz
512MB PC133
Chepo PCI sound
Intel PCI NIC
60GB IBM HDD
DVD drive

Only graphics card i hae spare is a SIS 6326 8mb AGP 2d card, which is a piece of junk really.

He wants to get acceptable performance in games like Q3, UT etc from the system.

What CHEAP graphics card would you recomend. Hed rather spend less than £80-90.

Any ideas? The only nVidia offering that seems to fit the bill is the Ti4200. Dont have any experience with the recent budget ATI offerings so any help is appreciated.

I'm thinking... Ti4800SE, Radeon9500, ti4600, or ti4400... not quite sure what the conversion is but i know you can get a ti4800se for 145.

Heck, a radeon 7200 would give you acceptable performance in ut2k3 and quake. I know from experiense because I have one installed on a rig that ran those games.

Good question, I think the earlier 9000 and 9200 models, but I'm not 100% certain.

I'd recommend a radeon 7200, 7500 or 8500 for that box, and the GF3 recommendation is good as they're pretty cheap nowadays... but then again, so are the GF4 Ti4200 64MB cards...

if he wants cheap 80-90 then 9500 is good if you get it from USA

i have a riva TNT and it runs games like quake 3 and unreal tournament really well

If i throw in a Ti4200 or a 8500 or a 9200 or whatever will it play GTA VC? Probably will but will it be any good?

yes, it will run VERY VERY well.

    Geforce 3
    PIII 1ghz
    640mb RAMBUS

I turned AA and AF up all the way and it did not slow down at all.
Although I was playing at the default resolution.

BTW, it's the 9100 that's the 8500 core (found it on the front page of futuremark).
