Stupid re-occuring error, please help

I've reinstalled windows around 6 times in the past 3 days. I've been really out of the loop with computers since I actually got a life, so I'm needing some help.

I installed win2k, and had everything working just dandy until I installed SP3, which resulted in a blue screen (not your normal BSOD, this was an ultra-uber super BSOD).

So I repaired 2k, but no sp3 for fear of having no internet access tonight. Now I keep getting an error message that "svchost.exe" has to be closed, and after that I cant copy/paste, or open links in IE. WTF is wrong?

Thanks.....

Oh yeah, and should I try installing SP3 again? I'm thinking it was just a one-time messup.

Also, when I try to open up my sound card driver program, it ends up taking up 1.35gb of ram, but doesnt do anything. I thought it was corrupted, but I downloaded it again and it worked

My first guess is that it's the Blaster virus still rearing its ugly head. If that's the case, any of these links on removing Blaster should help you out. If that doesn't work, report back here.

    So, this only happned once?

If so, how did you know it's "re-occuring")?

You'd have to get the error 2 or more times in order to deem it that. Therefore, I'd try installing SP3 again, before trying anything else.

It happens usually a couple minutes after i restart.

I tried using the "FixBlast" tool, but it didn't find anything ;[[[[

the svchost.exe problem happens every time.

the BSOD came after trying to install sp3. I'm going to go try it again, but if i don't post back here it's because i gave up.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys

Why not SP4? Also be sure to get the hotfix for the blaster vulnerability. Your problem definitely sounds like it.

To see if you've got blaster, check your HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Run etc. Also look for a file called msblast.exe in \winnt\system32 I think it is.

    Ohhhhh wait!

You get that error because you do not have SP3 installed, but Windows still is trying to operate unknowingly without SP3.

In other words:Your repaired Win 2K is looking for something SP3 did, but it cant find anymore. I know I had such an error after repairing Win XP w/SP1. That error should go away after you install SP3, which you should do once we figure out what this BSOD says, and we can fix the error.

This is why I say repairing is great, but it really pulls the carpet out from under your Windows install.

lol, thats why I never repair:) If it comes down to something like this, and I can still back my stuff up, its format time.

I thought the blaster worm could shut down a machine without being installed? It just causes a buffer underrun in the RCP server and svchost crashes....

Well, I tryed reinstalling SP3 again, same blue screen. Some virus corrupted many of my programs on my storage drive, so im thinking maybe it corrupted my SP3 installer also. I do have an SP4 beta CD, so I may try that when i get home from school.

Thanks for the suggestions, i appreciate it

I'll be sure and write down what it says when i get home, but i'm pretty sure the file was corrupted and thats why it doesnt run
    right.

Edit: My friend got that same virus too (the one that corrupts your files), and I'm wondering if there's any way to reverse the damage? It must have corrupted all my drivers too, because like i said before trying to run my sound card driver program results in a very slow computer, and the program takes up 1.35gb of ram
