Power Supply AMD system

What should I look for in voltage on 12v rail and 5v rail? I am
looking at sparkle power, vantec and antec. I am not concerned
about the price much and want a 500w or better supply. I will
look at all brands and some ideas are always helpful. Thanks:D

An Antec 403 can peak 430 and is basicly very close to the Enermax you have. An Antec rated about 500 will peak at about 540 + a watt or two on average and be much better. True-Powers are plenty good for that set of gear plus plenty of fans and give you some room for growth also.

The Sparkles have a bit less peak extra oomph but are reasonably even in quality. My codegens(the ones I own and can look at) currently vary from what people are quoting for Sparkles. However, CodeGen owns the Sparkle logo and brand name.

VanTecs I hav not used and have no specs for.

at least 30A on the 5v and about 18A on the 12v.

If your not worried about price you might consider a new line from Antec called True control. They actually have external adjustments to tweak the voltage on each line. Not True Power but a new line called True Control.

    Thanks All
I will look at all of those power supplys. This is for a new system
in the future hopefully with a Hammer CPU. Thanks Tex I think you are on to something there. I was looking at newegg and saw
those power supplys I think and adjustments sound ideal. :)

True control is a bit costly though, most Antec will feed you a solid 4.90v on the 5v rail even overclocking at full load. There's not a lot of need to tweak that. If you're not running a lot of case fans or other 12v devices, you may want to watch to be sure the 12v rail doesn't creep over 13v...

General rule of thumb -- 4.75v or higher 5v rail, 11.8-12.90v for the 12v rail (at least my experience says that instability, or even hardware failure, is possible out of these zones).

They are expensive ! But if you want somthing special its the answer.

The volatges I have been getting off my 600w robanton for less then half the cost have been great. And they never even flinch as I crank stuff up. I could often run days and days and never see the voltage fluctuate at all.

But the true power are very cool if porcie isnt a nig concern too.

AMD Fan; if you want the absolute best ps available, and cost isn't a big issue, there's only one place to go:

    www.pcpowercooling.com

be sure to read this while there:
    http://www.pcpowercooling.com/pdf/Turbo-Cool_510_vs.pdf

That's an Enermax 550w PS they're comparing it to BTW.
Also, my own testing seems to have verified what they claim about the 2nd fan being ineffective, so I have little reason to doubt their other claims.

If they're too expensive, go with an Antec. Outside of those two brands, if it's not AMD approved, don't even think about it.

Look for a min of 30A on both 5 and 12 volt lines (or is it the 3.3v line I'm thinking of). If its anything under 25A, its too weak.

my antec 400w has a 12a 12v line. It has powered a number of what I would consider loaded systems over the course of the 3 years I've had it. It's powered 1.4GHz TBirds, all the way up to Barton 2500s, with as many as 3 10k rpm scsi drives, 4 PCI cards, a Radeon 8500, 2 optical drives, a cd, a zip, and tons (~7) case fans. In fact, I've run the system off a 350w enermax before (only for a few minutes for testing purposes).

Well those both look good. PC Power and Cooling is a little more
than most power supplys but looks like a good unit. I like the
Antec too especially because it is easy to adjust the rails if
needed. They are both obviously top of the line power supplys
and I cannot lose with either one. The Comp USA near my house
actually has the Antec Power supply at the same price as Newegg. The True control by Antec is gaining favor but I should
think on this for a few days. lol Thanks great info guys. :)
