yeah, i belive all those 9500's that could be modded to 9700's were all phased out, and now that they are so hard to find, people sell em for more than they are worth. as for the best video card, i havent been in the market for a year or so, but i am sure someone has an opinion on this matter . . .
R9700NP can be flashed, or modded, to a radeon 9700 pro. If you're lucky you can find a good one for ~$200. I'm sure they are cheaper on ebay. They overclock fairly well. My 9700NP does 5k in 3dmark03
I would have to say that a 9600 Pro or 5600 Ultra would be your best bet for performance and longevity. Both come in 128MB and 256MB versions so pick your flavor . Also if you are not too concerned with longevity but want solid performance in modern games you might check out a Geforce Ti 4600. If it were me, I would get a 9600 Pro since I'm an ATi fan, but I have a friend who has a 5600 Ultra and he is very happy with it.
So for about $200 should I get RADEON 9600 PRO 256MB or Nvidia GeForce FX 5600, 256MB(128bit) DDR. I think some report said 9600 Pro is faster & better, is it? What do you recommend? Thanks.:)

9600 Pro is faster by all means. article It outperforms the fx5600 ultra on almost every test. Spending money on the fx5600 would be a sad sad move at this moment and the 9600's are verrry easy to oc because of their .13 micron process. Buy the 9600pro. Be sure to buy the pro version.
I wouldn't recommend going for 256 mb of ram. Because the applications that are going to need it wont be out in a long time and by that time your gpu will be too slow too run the applications so you'll have to buy a new video card. Save your money and go for a ATI RADEON 9600 PRO 128MB 8X AGP DVI/TV RETAIL for $173.

You can pick up refurbished 9700s and 9500 pros from newegg for less than $200... those would probably be the best cards in that price range.
