Which Processor

edited September 2003 in Hardware
This should be an easy question to answer.
I pretty sure I'm going to buy an Asus A7V600 MoBo. It looks like it going to do everything i need but which processor should I get. 2 seem to fall into the right bracket.
1) AMD Athlon "Thoroughbred" XP 2600+ 333FSB £75

2)AMD Athlon "Barton" XP2500+ 333FSB (Socket A) £71

I'll mostly be using it for gaming but other general bit and bobs to.

Cheers

B

    Get a Barton 512K over the Tbred 256K. I recommend the 2500+

Also the speed of a NForce2 motherboard is worth a 10% increase in clockspeed over KT400 and KT600 motherboards

(Bear in mind that I'm running 2 KT400 mobos at the moment :) )

The Abit NF7-S v2.0 and the Asus Nforce2 mobo are highly rated

You mean somting like an Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2. What makes it better? The nforce only has a 333 fsb and the kt600 has 400 fsb. Confused!

Abit and Asus among other NForce2 motherboards have been upped to newer revisions during early Summer to the Ultra 400 version. The Abits are simply referred to as Rev. 2.0 and the Asus are known as Ultra 400. Both of these rock big time! One of the best things about the NForce2's is that the PCI bus is locked. The Abit also unlocks the multipliers of your CPU with no modding to the chip.

Thank for the help and welcome!
One more question the Asus A7V600 has onboard raid. So my choices are:-

    1) Asus A7V600 £65

    2) Asus A7N8X-X nForce2 £87

    3) Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 £60

    Which one

    *all* nforce2 boards unlock .
my last via chipset mobo was the uber KT7A v1.3 so i can't speak about the latest but nf2 boards are quite popular .Omega65 is the one to blame for my 8rda+ acquisition back in January ...

    I LOVE IT !!!

but since you're pretty sure you're going to buy an Asus A7V600 ,i won't say more ... ;)

    ... Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 £60 sounds good .
get the barton 2500+ instead of the tbred 2600+ .

get the barton, i'd also recommend the nforce board... i would assume the "-X" means its the deluxe version, which has lots of nice features including the soundstorm onboard sound, so i'd pick that if you can. but talking about the CPU pick the barton.

The older Asus NF2 boards didn't unlock as did several others in addition to current offerings from Leadtek, FIC, and a couple more.

It sounds like you are certain you want to stick with an Asus board. Even though they are not the 1st choice of the most serious overclockers they are still one of the current top NF2 boards made. If you want RAID get the "Deluxe", heck I would get the "Deluxe" anyway because it gives you more flexability and room for growth.

I would definitely go for the 2500 Barton for a processor. They are giving good overclocks and contrary to belief of some run slightly cooler. This leads to another thing that needs to be addressed, proper cooling. Make sure you get yourself a high quality heat sink and fan like at least a Thermalright SK-7 with a fan capable of at least 44CFM.

Thanks again for everyones help, it's been a while since i've looked into this kind of think.

    Just one last think,

Am I wrong or does the Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 only have a 333FSB?

and the other 2 boards have a 400FSB?

surely the 400's would be better?

Depending on the revision where you buy it you should be able to get a rev. 2.0 (400 fsb). I looked at the Asus site and the A7N8X-X is a stripped down version of the regular board, it is not the 'Deluxe".

The A7N8X-Deluxe will handle 200MHz FSB. The rev 2.0s will do it out of the box, the older ones require a BIOS update. But they'll all do it. Also, the nForce2 chipset is significantly better than the KT600.
