laptop lcd as desktop monitor

edited November 2004 in Hardware
just thinking theoretically here (this may or may not be an obscenely stupid question) but, is it possible to use any kind of device to utilize a laptop monitor as a desktop monitor? for example, have the normal laptop computer running and then switch the display to a desktop computers input. my thought would be to get some kind of external tv tuner with a vga input...... thoughts?

i wasnt thinking remote protocols or anything because the screen wont work 3d rendered and it lags over these.

No, I think the response time on a laptop LCD is too slow to use as a desktop monitor.

If you want a good LCD monitor, NEC's panels have a response time as low as 16ms.

but aside from looking bad, is it possible?

Probably not. I don't know of any laptop with svideo or component video in.

Basically, no. The Sager NP88x0 series has a built-in TV tuner, but you'd still need some kind of RCA/SVideo to coax converter, and the TV output on most video cards is not of high enough quality for it to be practical in any case.

in that case...are there any remote connection protocols that render 3d screens over the connection?

i know remote desktop doesnt work with this

erm... previous post sounds remarkably like spam... you might try VNC, but I'm not sure how well it handles 3D stuff...

You can do remote desktop sharing through VNC and it will work, however even over a gigabit network it'd probably be to slow to get the type of effect you want. You'd need an actuall hardware hookup to have it run propperly.

wow, i thought i got unregistered when the fourms got hacked or whatever.

anyways, thanks for the responses, but i ended up just sticking with my trusty 21" crt trinitron.

the original idea was to get a laptop for here at college (im a freshman) and use my older shuttle xpc without lugging up a monitor, but i ended up not getting a laptop
