My computer restarts for no reason in WinXP

Hello all,

My computer restarts whenever I try to play a video file or play Warcraft. And sometimes it restarts when I listen to music.

I have:
Abit NF7 w/ 2600+
Radeon 9800 Pro
2x256 Crucial 2700 DDR
Soundblaster Live!
Linksys Wireless Ethernet

I don't know what is going on here? It was working fine until someone who thought he could fix it totally screwed it up. He formatted my hdd and reinstalled XP. Since then it has been totally screwing up.

Thanks

are you running the latest bios/nforce2 drivers?

what are your temps like? cpu/case?

are you overclocking? what is your fsb at? and what mem timings?

I'm not overclocking at all and my temps are around 40-45 C. My FSB is at 133 and the memory timings are set for optimal.

Does it pop up some kind of error message saying you've got x amount of time before the system restarts? I think there was a virus going around that did that (altho I don't keep up on viruses- I reformat once a month or more, so it's kind of immaterial for me...)

I'd suggest formatting and reinstalling again.

Check your System Events and see if there is anything squirrley happening before it restarts. I had similar problems and needed to install the latest Via Bus master IDE's.....

Look under your currently running process for msblast.exe if you see that run some kind of virus scanner.

No other games work either. The computer now freezes when I'm just in Windows. There's no virus on my computer... and there is no error message.

And when I installed the lastest Catalysts, I got that memory dump blue screen before it gets to Windows. I think I will just reformat. Don't have the time now but will do soon.

    Thanks guys

    Hello all,

I ran MEMTEST 3.0 and it restarted at around 30%. So I guess that means its the RAM...

    What do you guys think?

Well I was taking the RAM out of my computer and noticed that the computer runs fine with just 1 RAM chip. Is it possible for a RAM slot on the motherboard to be messed up?

yes, but its more likely the stick you took out was a bad stick

Its not the RAM. Each stick my itself runs fine. Just when they are both in, it doesn't so I'm going to get a replacement. Do I go through NewEgg or ABIT for the warranty, I've never had to do this before so I don't know.

If others sticks do the same, how many memory slots do your MB have, and are the sticks where they allowed to be ?
