More problems with my new killer rig... :(

edited September 2003 in Hardware
Hey guys, originally I posted this thread when I got my new hardware... I have the new power supply now, and everything is alright except for a single, huge problem.

Before I go on, my specs

AMD Barton XP 2500+ 333 fsb
Abit NF7-S rev 2.0
3 sticks of Crucial PC3200 256MB
Sapphire Radeon 9500 Pro
3Com 10Bt network card
Creative SB Live! Gamer 4.1
Maxtor 80GB fluid ball bearings ATA133
Antec 430W PS TruePower

I was getting BSOD's until strangely, today. These may or may not be gone for good, but in any case, I have a big problem. When it's up and good, my computer runs quite smoothly, but at random times at least a few times per day, the system shuts off instantly, followed by a constant beeping noise coming from the computer. The beeping noise is 2 different tones, one high one low, alternating one after another. This will continue until I turn off the power strip. This is NOT the same thing that was happening before I bought the power supply, because then it didnt beep after it turned off.

I am so frustrated with this new rig... I don't know what to do. I was running Win98SE until I got a XP CD tonight, so I reformatted, and booted from the CD.

Right after the Kernel Debugger, etc load at the bottom of the screen (right in the beginning after it asks if you need to install third party raid etc..) when it finished loading for like a minute it said "Starting Windows" at the bottom, (this is the blue dos screen) and then I saw a flash of a new screen, then the system shut off followed by the infernal beeping. I went to Fail-Safe defaults, same exact thing.

I have no idea what to do.

WTF!!!!

check your temps.....reseat heat sink with fresh thermal paste.

I've put heat sinks on backwards before....purely for testing purposes only though. ;-)

I had a problem similar to that when I was building a new system. It wouldn't start up and made a high and low-pitched beep. I did a little digging around and somewhere said that it's a CPU issue if you hear beeps like that. I re-seated my CPU and checked the heatsink and now it runs fine.

It could be a heat-related issue on your system...

i think thats the beep code for either the cpu temp or the cpu fan not working, moniter your cpu temps and see if they look high

They're pretty low, running normally idle in the 46.5c range...

    Hello, there.

Try "disable" all temperature monitoring settings in BIOS.

I am not familiar with nForce2 mobo, but are you sure you can have 3 modules of RAM on your mobo? I thought it works only with 2 sticks.

    Well there's 3 slots.. doesn't that mean I can use 3 DIMMS?

im pretty sure u can have 3 sticks if you do something in bios, not sure eben though i have a nforce board, i only have 1 stick right now

You should be able to run all 3 sticks w/o a problem.

That particular beep code on the nf7 is the cpu overheat code. How do I know? When you start pushing 1.95v+ through a 1.5v chip it gets to a point where not even an SLK-900A and a 92mm tornado can handle it. 50*C idle is damn hot. I suggest a heatsink upgrade and some more case fans.

But why would it shut down and make that sound when the CPU is not overheating, at least according to the values I have set in the BIOS. It's set to shutdown/warning at 75c, but that's wayy higher than my temps.

And 41-49c, those are high idle temps? I have a ThermalTake ThermoEngine laying around equipped w/ a Delta fan... but it's so damn loud. I'm using the retail AMD Heatsink right now - it came with the CPU. Are temperatures really a strong contender for the cause of this problem?

I'm at school right now, but when I get home I'll swap the retail heatsink for the ThermoEngine. If that fails... well god damn, I fu#&*ing hope that fixes it.

    ---Sigh---

    Thanks guys

Yes temperatures are really a strong contender in your problem. 46.5c is a fairly high idle temp. Running on full load my temps would be like that.

    Here's more to ponder:

The temp you see via the winbond is from the thermal diode and the temps the bios uses for shutdown are taken from the on chip sensor. the temps these 2 reflect are very different. If you are running idle @ 46.5 then you put it to work it will no doubt get to around 53 or so fairly easily. Then add at least 15C for the difference between the thermal diode and the on chip and you are real close to disaster. Are you overclocking? What is your core voltage? How big is your case and how many fans of what size are in it? I would get all this sorted out, zero the drive and do a fresh install of XP.

CPU Thermal Protection is shutting your system down. Chances are you heatsink is n't making good contact with the CPU core.

    I have a Barton 2500+ @ 2.00ghz v1.70 running FAH and it's (full load) temp is 40C (Thermalright SK7 w 50cfm fan)

    Go to SVC and grab a Thermalright SLK900, SLK800 or SK7 & a 50cfm or higher fan
