raid scores

edited November 2003 in Hardware
Hi,
I have jsut installed 2 * Maxtors 80gb 7200 aTA133 HD

I test both of them individually using the HD tach test and the scores were pretty similiar i.e.

Max read 65kbs average 57kbs

Now I have set up my on board raid high point controller and raid (0) and re-tested but the average read score I get now is lower than i had before??

max 77 min 36 Average 47kbs and seems to ocsilate between 40-50 across the raid quite a lot??

IF you need anymore information then please let me know ..

this is costing me dearly and Im getting no increase in performance..

many thanks

What stripe size and cluster size did you use? for future referance it will be listed as stripe/cluster, 16/16 is the best place to start. Most of us are using ATTO for benching RAID arrays and it will be easier to see how you are doing as the others don't break it down enough. Below is the link to the download.

Change your "Total Length" from 4 MB to 32 MB and re-run the ATTO test. :)
Also, change to "Overlapped I/O" if possible.

Then we can compare scores :)

there is a maxtor utility...run a search at short media..it imporves perfomace but it is only in beta right now

Read the post but does that mean u just use the utility for the drive without a raid? or use it then raid it?

and where can you get it from now anyone got a copy they can send me?

and finally are you saying that the maxtors are simply not good for running a raid system?

    thanks

d'oh...i forgot u cant use that for raid...as far as harddrives go...my knowledge is pretty limited...so i post whatever help i can...thats about the only harddrive tweak that i know of...but u cant use it for raid...so i guess i just wasted space

well thats interesting, I thought any HD could be strip raided. Guess u wasted space I wasted money!!

Il set it up as a mirror instead and go for security then. I did lose a raid once so maybe not wasted after all..

You changed it to I/O Comparison not Overlaped I/O. You need it in the selection in the middle. And you should still be able to do 16/16.

You should be able to get them working nicely, you just need to post a bench with adjustments mentioned in the above post to this one, and then if necessary just create a new array and partition using a different stripe and cluster size combination.

    Philbot

Lets work this out and I am sure you will get better scores than what you posted so far. You need a lot of patience when first starting out with RAID and it can catch on real fast. Post a new test with the settings as I have them in the attachment below along with what board and the version of HPT controller on it. Also go to "run > msinfo32.exe" then in the column on the left Expand "Hardware Resources" and click on IRQ's. Then look for your controller and note what IRQ it is using then see if anything else has the same IRQ and tell ust what it is along with the IRQ number.

Here is what msinfo32.exe will look like.

If you spend a few hours (at MOST) tweaking those drives, you should be able to hit ~100MB/s with them... that's what my 160GB DiamondMax 9s do. I'd suggest striping them and tweaking it.

That's wierd, 2.02 is the version I think all of us use. It isn't greyed out on the ATTO's you posted earlier on in the thread, what's different?

EDIT: WTH, were'd that post go? Philbot, what you doing matey? he he.:)

When I try to use it I get an error " cannot use overlap I/O in windows 9*

You think I better install XP before I go down this road ??

If you are planning on installing XP anyway then by all means please do as it will make things easier on you. You really want to use NTFS also. Are you using a third drive separate from your RAID array for the OS? I recomend it as it makes setting up and testing the array much easier.
