Doom 3 First Impressions

Alright, so I picked up Doom 3 earlier today from my local gamestop and these are the first impressions I get when dealing with it. First keep in mind my system specs are:
athlon 2600+ xp
1gig of pc2100
radeon 9800 pro 128mb

additionally doom 3 is running off a serial ata seagate harddrive.

Upon first opening the box, you can tell the quality that permeates from this product. It is very similar to a Blizzard game, with a nice jewel case, and a cryptic high quality instruction manual that has alot of cool concept art. So yea, I installed the game on my drive and booted it up. My initial settings were 640x480 at medium quality, i didn't even start up the game: i immediatly raised res to 1024x768 (which requires a game restart). I then played through the opening with this resolution (very similar to halflife), though it ran smooth some of the time, I wouldn't recommend playing at a higher res during gameplay, so I lowered it to 800x600 for the sake of agility. Let me just make a point that this game is incredible.

First of all, I am damn scared, thats why I am here writing this review after playing the first level, because I did not particularly want to go on at this juncture. I am 19 and in good physical health and I feel like I am going to have heart failure. EVERYTHING is INCREDIBLE when it comes to detail and how much they thought it out.

The warez scenes have been releasing "light hacks" because the game is "too dark". The reason it is a "light hack" is because you simply cannot raise your gamma, Doom3 has opaque shadows. iD has made it very easy to use your flashlight, this is because you will be using it alot, I have it bound to F and mouse2.

I really cannot express how amazing this game is to behold, I suggest you get a good friend, buy the game: then go home, turn out the lights, turn up the speakers, and take turns. If you don't have someone with you ( i have my little brother ) I do not know how long you will last. I am usually not seen as a prissy poo, but this is entirely too scarey. In most 3dshooters that think their scarey (painkiller, avp2, systemshock2) it becomes far less scarey when you have a gun. This is not the case in doom3. It is scare after scare after scare.

I am sorry if this review is alittle frantic, but yea, three cheers for iD... I will expand on this post alittle later.

Yeah, I agree with what you said. The flashlight imo is awesome... it really feels "right". Enter a pitch black corridor and turn on the flashlight and that's all you're going to see... not like other games where you could faintly see other stuff around you. The imperfect lens is also a cool feature, which you can see projected onto objects.

Atmosphere is also A+. I had the feeling throughout the entire game I was in a cross between the movies Total Recall (stepping out onto the Martian surface) and Aliens (pitch black corridors, industrial machines everywhere).

Have you gotten up to the room where there are candles and satanic-like scriptures writen on the floor, with blood-like veins coming outta the walls? :D That scene was pretty intense IMO.

I agree Doom 3 is scary, but after a while it does become predictable. I prefer to think of Doom 3 as one of the most intense FPS games I've EVAR played ;)

What kinda sound system you got btw? I love the sound enemies make when they spawn outta nowhere... the low-rumbling sound really shakes my room :jelly:

Someone... who happens to rhyme with Cloud  But it's just a test drive for me :D I do intend on buying the game tomorrow.

I got to the part with the candles and satanic writing, its messed up... My friend is on phase 4 which I think is the deltalabs... If you got to the part where you first encouter those dog things, omg so freaking scarey... there is also what i call "possession" cutscenes scattered throughout the game, you'll be walking along and it breaks into a cutscene where everything is tinted red and really messed up vision type stuff happens.. ie your face melts off etc. it is usually followed by a few enemies.

I got klipsche 2.1 system, so yea, the sub really rocks the house.

Yeah, I experienced one of those scenes... wasn't quite sure what it was.

Scariest game evar, no doubt. Wait until you play this game with 1600X1200 and most of the bells and wistles on. It's unbelievable. However, one tip...AA is a thing that isn't really needed here. I mean, who got time to see if the circles and/or the edges are completely round or straight? The scenes are so damn close anyway. Use higher resolution instead of AA.

Please tell me you don't play it at 1600x1200... even my comp, which is somewhat new and decent, stutters just a tad at 1024 when a four or so imps spawn out of nowhere.

I run mine at medium settings, tho. High just chops too much for me. I need everything silky smooth :jelly:

Yea, I run at medium settings and now 640x480 to avoid all chop... too many situations where silky smooth is needed to survive.

I run it at highest settings, but not ultra. Never dips under 40 fps, which in my eyes is floating. Ultra settings do crap out, yes. But that's because it's a little bug. That setting is aimed for cards with 512mb ram..which doesn't exist ....yet. You are limited by your videocard if anything Versello. The difference is major, i promise. You would beat my setup to death if you had a x800XT. (I have a pro, but modded to XT)

I know I'm limited to my video card. I was just wondering how you could play it with acceptable fps... until now, you mentioned having a x800 series card. Your sig says 9800, so I was like WTF! :p

Plays with minimal chop on my Radeon 9700 Pro at maximum settings in the ATI control panel and Medium in game at 1024 res.

Also, this game keeps scaring the shiznite out me! But it kicks major ass!

Okay, So now I am a ways into the game and I have encoutered alot of our favorite enemies and enemies that you see in alot of the screens. I would like to make a few additional notes to my original first impressions segment:

First of all, they really know how to make it look like your getting mauled, when you first are hit by a half-monster, half-machine quadro-ped you'll what what i mean... it feels like you are in the damn things mouth being shaken around.

Also, as I told my girlfriend, this game is satanic, satanic, SATANIC! Some of the stuff is really disturbing, and you have two options. To finish the game you gotta just grimace and act like its no big deal.. just keep shooting and stayed focus, basically your voluntarily becoming desensitized. To not finish the game, you can do what is natural, tuck the important stuff between your legs, roll up in a ball, and sob.

All the weapons are well done, so far I have gotten the nades, pistol, shotgun, smg, and chaingun... the shotgun is my favorite, and I really like the reloading soundeffects for the chaingun ( you hear him slide the clip in then yank, and the barrels kinda jerk around as he is doing this ). The guys at ID covered everything, this game is amazing.

Also, for performance this is what I did, and with these settings i get 1024x768 medium quality no chop what-so-ever with the setup I mentioned before.

Basically, I close every program i have through process manager including explorer, till I am using up like 200mb of ram of my gig all services and stuff like that... then I initiate a new task of Doom3. It runs nice and smooth and the only things I am running in the background is my firewall to keep the bogies out. Either way, ICRONIANS! SWING BY GAMESTOP, EBGAMES, SOFTWARE ETC., ANYWHERE and BUY THIS GAME (though it does weigh in at a hefty 60gp). Or if your familiar with a group.. err.. called reloaded, you can maybe.. uhm- you guys know about bit-torrent right?

    Embrace the newage of 3dshooters!

Wait till ya get the plasma gun :D It's sorta hidden and around one of the levels close to where you get the chain gun if I remember correctly, but it seriously kicks ass.

And yes, it's very satanic. All games from id have a distinct satanic feel that we've all come to know and love :D

I'm certainly not as far as you guys, but this game is great! I experienced one of those "out of body, red cutscenes" just a moment ago in a bathroom. It was freaky, but I saw no enemies. Anyway, great game! GO GET IT!

    animal farm?

edit: nm, found out what Animal Crossing is on Urban Dictionary <3

Sounds a lot like this one japanese SNES game I used to play... Sakura Farmer or something. You start a farm, raise your own chickens, find yourself a village woman and make children and turn them into slaves.

Alright so the first thing I did ... or rather the thing I did later int the day when I got doom3 was share it with a few friends, my friend installed it and when he is in the middle of playing (smooth and what not) it just closes. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason, although the first time it did it, it said it was having problems writing to the memory- usually no error or anything, just goes right to desktop... any suggestion on how we can fix this?

we are gonna try to install new vid. drivers but that is all we can think of.

I started from the beginning of Doom III again... this time on Veteran skill level. You should definately play it on Veteran if you wanna experience how it was meant to be played :D Like 1 hit from a guy and you've already lost 40 health.

Ok... been checking online stores for the past couple days and I decided to check Bestbuy just before I left on my lunch break and they still said they wouldn't have it until the 4th but I convinced my dad to take me by the Bestbuy near our work and lo and behold they had some non-reserved copies hidden away so I picked up my copy :D (Boy was my friend mad when he saw that I got it before his reserved copy was even available!)

I installed it, started it up and changed res to 800x600 at High details for starters although I think 1024x768 will be doable... All I get as far as slow downs are little pauses when it switches from 1st to 3rd person or a door opens and something intense happens, no slow or choppy movement thus far though!

I started the game on Marine difficulty and It is fun so far although I played through the first 2-3 missions during light time so it wasn't quite as scary and I didn't have my speakers turned up loud enough I guess cuz as soon as it got darker and I turned those speakers up the game got 10x more intense! I'm lovin it! I just died for the first time to see what it was like (actually because I got ambushed :P)

I made my own little D3 DM server to test out some of the other weapons, the plasma rifle is TIGHT! and the rocket launcher leaves a neato lookin shockwave. Can't wait to get in there with some of my friends!

This game is definately worth the 50 or so bucks you may end up paying for it if you get it soon. It's NOT worth it to wait lol! Get it straight away!

I can't wait to continue this game along and I find some of the bigger, tougher enemies along with finding the better weapons :D
