Non-suck Low Profile VGA cooler?

My GeForce 3 Ti500's stock sink is ailing and failing.

Can anyone reccommend a GPU HSF that has decent (see: at least as good as stock) cooling properties and _doesn't_ occupy an adjacent PCI slot? I looked at the Vantec IceBerq4 coolers, but they won't fit on the card. The IceBerq4 interferes with the ramsinks.

So, yeah. I'm not above modding 1U server HSF's, but I haven't found any short enough. We're talking 20mm tall MAXIMUM folks.

1u heatsink (no fan) and fan bracket?

It's possible, but I'd like to explore any other option first.

    Watercooling maybe?

The ramsinks may not even be worth keeping. I'm not convinced that they help that much, especially with the thermal tape the manufacturer probably used.

A 1U copper HSF would be my suggestion. It would be cake to trim down with a dremel if it was necessary.

the first Vantec Iceberq will most likely fit I know it is much smaller

Which Iceberq did you get? There are two models- one that's sized for the GeForce 4 ONLY, and the normal one. If you got the one for the GeForce 4, that would explain why it's not fitting.

I haven't bought anything yet, that photo was taken from a Tech Lounge review of them trying to install the non-Pro version of the IceBerq4 on a random GeForce 3 Ti200 card. The card layout and appearance is the exact same as my Ti500, though. FYI they had both the IceBerq4 Pro (GeForce 4 Ti/FX) and the non-Pro (everybody else) coolers and neither one would fit.

Visiontek used thermal epoxy (looks like arctic alumina) to bond those sinks to the VRAM. I found this out when I tried to swap them out for leftover DDR heatsinks that came with my Thermaltake RAM cooler set. Needless to say, they weren't coming off.

well then I think your only option is to get the largest passive heatsink you can (length and width wise), and use a fan bracket to blow air across the card.

25mm = ~1", so these might work (altho they may need to be trimmed to go around the ramsinks...):
    <ul>
<li> <b>Both of these will work with a 40X10 or 50X10mm fan on top (work as in they'll fit... I'm not sure they can handle the heat output, but I don't think it'll be a problem)</b>

If you put a 40x10 or 50x10mm fan on that, it would work.

    These may work, too:

    http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=270&item=CF-73&type=store (with the fan removed)

http://sales.goldmine-elec.com/prodinfo.asp?prodid=3554 (this may be a bit too tall... it's EXACTLY 25.4mm)

    http://www.mpja.com/productview.asp?product=14399+HS

That may work, if you've got the room for the radiator next to the video card.

Whoops, looks like I pulled that number out of my @$$ (ouch). I busted out the ruler, it can only be 15mm tall w/fan. I like the idea of just a copper block and heatpipe to somewhere else's problem. Thanks geeky!

Well then that one I said that you could use a 10mm thick fan on is going to be your only option, except for an alpha wingfin heatsink from www.1coolpc.com.

Either way, you'll need a fan bracket (Zalman's comes to mind) to blow air across that card.

I think I may try the old IceBerq chipset cooler (not iceberq4). It looks like it'll fit.

drasnor, the fan on my VT GF3 Ti500 just recently died too, and what I did was to just screw a 40 X 10 mm fan to the hs after removing the dead fan from it. It does occupy the space needed for the 1st pci slot but I always leave that one unpopulated anyways for better cooling to the vid card.

mudd, I dunno if he mentioned it in this thread or not...

but the card is in a Slot 1 Baby AT system... he needs every PCI slot.

I think I mentioned it in a different thread, but yeah it's going on my Asus P2B-B board. When I get all the parts, it's going into an IBM Personal Computer AT case, and yes the board is Baby-AT. No spare PCI after LAN, SCSI, and sound, so low profile is the only way to go. The 56k modem takes up the non-shared ISA slot.

I'm planning to overclock also, so I'll probably get two iceberqs and slap the other one on my NB (an i440BX). I'm hoping to get a 1.4GHz Tualatin-S to use as the CPU, and get the bus up to 150MHz. Finding the old skool Corsair is getting hard now though.

how are you going to run the FSB 50% out of spec?
  • edited November 2003
OK, then how about this copper Vantec iceberq from svc? The specs from Vantec's site give the dimensions of it so maybe he can do some measuring and see if it will fit on it. Here is a pic of the specs from Vantec's site.

If you have decent case cooling, with some airflow across the nb, you probably won't need a fan cooling nb cooler with the old BX chipset. Also, you will be extremely lucky to find a vid card that will be able to run such a high AGP bus speed, since the BX chipset only has a 2/3 AGP divisor, which will put the AGP at 100 MHz with a 150 fsb.

EDIT: As far as memory goes, the Crucial PC133 Cas2 is good for at least 150 fsb at Cas2, no problems. It will go to 155-160 before it starts crapping out and will be a lot easier and cheaper to find.
