Spammers not giving up

edited November 2003 in Science & Tech
FrontBridge, an email security firm, has reported a significant spike in the amount of junk mail that is being sent out. The company fears that spammers are starting to get even more organised and that they are starting to launch larger and larger assaults on Web users. As if it couldn't get any worse...

[blockquote]This mid-October surge in spam activity could mean that some of the most determined and active spammers have added many more email addresses to the lists that they use when sending their unsolicited emails.

Other experts, though, believe that the anti-spam industry should be able to combat the threat.

"We often see spikes in the spam load that last a few days. This may be attributed to one such spike," Matt Sergeant, senior anti-spam technologist at Messagelabs, told ZDNet UK. "Generally these do not last, as it is very difficult to sustain these kind of attack levels without getting noticed. The general trend for spam, though, is definitely on the up, with our latest figures showing that 50.5 percent of all email is now spam."

In the past few days i have been getting more than 8 spam mails a day which is a ton compared to my normal 1 or 2 spam emails a week. I really wonder how they suddenly got my email when i haven't signed up for anything with that email in months.

My old addy gets an avreage of 90 a day. :( Luckily most goes into the buld mail and I just delete that anymore without looking at it. Only about 1 or 2 a day slip into my inbox.

I've just tried using mail washer pro for my spam problem with my hotmail account, and I think it's a bit too soon to tell for sure, but the ability to bounce email back to the spammer from postmaster@hotmail.com saying the address you've sent to doesn't exist should make a huge difference. It hasn't worked on all the messages, but about 25% of them manage to go back. Unfortunately, I doubt it's gonna get better in the next while, christmas is coming and unless people stop buying from these asshats, it's gonna get worse and worse. If I could only tell them that I'm not in debt, I'm happy with the size of my penis, I don't have breasts, I can get it up all the time, I don't need health insurance because I'm canadian, I don't need any more credit cards, I could care less what my girlfriend is typing on her computer, I don't have any long lost war buddies I want to find, I don't want a new car, and I know how to disable windows messenger service, I'd get no spam at all.

I have about 7 accounts I check multiple times a day, between them I probably fight through 50, maybe a few more, spam emails every day. Sometimes more sometimes less. I think most was after one day I fired up outlook and got 134 new messages.

I never had one SPAM message. Nodda. Nodda until, I installed Kazaa and ran it! Then I found Kazaa Lite. Too late, damage was already done.

I have a theory that my daily dose of SPAM was compounded by this new "Do-Not-Call" list crap. They can't bug us on the phone, so they will terrorize us through our email :(:banghead: :mad2:
