Computer Randomly Freezes!!

edited March 2005 in Hardware
I have a Emachines T1100. The bearings on the fan were wearing down plus fan/heatsink very dirty. I ordered new unit from pcfactoryoutlet.com I installed the new heatsink & fan. Started computer up, fan running fine, but computer froze before windows would even load. Finally after several attempts, I was able to load windows however it will run anywhere from 30 seconds to 15 minutes and then freeze up. I have ran all necessary virus/s[yware scans which is not the problem. I have ran the computer in safe mode and it still freezes up. I have reinstalled the old fan, and then put the new fan back in again to make sure it is installed correctly and it still freezes. I know it must be related to the installation of this fan since the computer was fine before this happened. Any suggestions here?

try another fan other than the old one

maybe you have a bad component somewhere

This word is used to much, try to outline what exactly happens.
If a restart gets you going again then stop there and have a good look at what your doing when it "freezes"

I hope that was a long enough "sentence" for zuntnar.Quote.
but the short/ non proper senences that you post are not understood by most of us.

When I say "freezes", I mean the computer freezes up, meaning it will not allow me to do anything (move the cursor, ctrl, alt, del won't work, doesn't do a damn thing). It doesn't slow down, it really freezes. It doesn't happen when I am doing anything in paticular. Sometimes it freezes before windows finishes loading and it will do it eventually no matter what i am doing, or even if i am not doing anything and i leave it alone at idle.

It seems you just bought your first PC and need to learn how to use it.
Sorry but your post implys this reply. :)
Why did you think it was a cooling or cpu or hardware problem ?
This seem more like a OS problem. It's not easy to work on this way.
When you do get to your desktop you must start troubleshooting right away.
Is this your only PC ?
If its warranted take it "all" back.

    What fan did you buy?

    Hey Old timer-
Thanks alot for your smart ass comments. For someone who seems to think you know what you are talking about, you couldn't be further from the truth. Maybe you need to learn to use a computer since you need someone to clarify the term "Freezes". Anyhow it's DEFINTELY not an OS problem. I installed a temperature monitoring program. The fan is just not working properly as the temperature quickly climbs and once a certain temp is reached, it freezes. Must not be sitting correctly on the CPU probably needs to be cleaned up first or something. I certainly don't know everything about computers, very far from it. But don't claim that I do know. Of course, why else would I be depending on the knowledge of others in hopes it might help me out? And OLDTIMER, it's certainly clear you know less about anything than all the others here so I suggest you take your wrinkly ass away from topics which are over your huge freaking head. You think way too highly of yourself.

Hey crystal2005 did you put any thermalpaste when install the new fan?? (i guess it is the cpu fan you changed.)If you didn`t this maybe the problem. I tried once booting up without any and was freezing in less than a minute after loading windows. idle was 54c. After putting the thermalpaste i idled to 32c. Try this out. By the way what are the specificasions of the computer. It may also be a psu problem. Try Removing some "Unessacary " hardware and try booting up.

It may be that it's still overheating. Just because the fan or heatsink & fan assembly is new does not mean it's any good. The Celeron in that thing doesn't put out much heat, but I do want to make sure that the heatsink and/or fan you bought can handle it, as freezing like that can be caused by the P3's (and P3-based Celerons) integrated thermal protection kicking in. And you did put thermal paste on the cpu (or remove any protective covering over the pre-applied thermal paste on the heatsink if it had some), right?

It could also be a dying motherboard, dying RAM, a power supply issue, or (more unlikely) a CPU that's dying. OR it could be a software issue. It may simply be time to reinstall windows.

Thats why I don't have or never had this problem.Or tried to solve it the way you are.
Good luck.I'll watch for the final results.

So have the courtesy to just ignore what YOU see as bad advice.
Is this not an overheating problem, not FREEZING ? I might have not replied.

I had a heatsink assembly that came with what looked like a thermal patch on the bottom. Installed it, and had the exact problem you did. Turned out the "thermal patch" was nothing more then a protective coating applied to prevent scratching of the heatsink base. Of course, removing it and applying proper thermal paste corrected the problem...

    Hey ShockJock-
Thank you very much for your input. I think you just may have helped me out.
