got my new case setup

edited March 2005 in Hardware
Got my case a day early it was supposed to have been delivered tomorrow and its certainly worth the money

sys spec
Antec P160 aluminium case
xp 2800+ thoroghbred not barton
1 gig ddr 3200
Abit AT7 MAX2 m/b
Radeon 9600 pro 256 meg running 17" & 21" monitors
volcano 11 H/S/F
880 gig of hard drive
pioneer 109 dvdrw
liteon 52x cd/rw

using 1x120mm fan as an exhaust at the moment without any other system fans apart from the volcano 11 on the cpu and my temps are

sys temp= 25c
cpu temp = 30c
cpu temp on full load = 48c

now i can hear myself breath as this case is very quiet i might try it with a 120mm intake fan tomorrow and see if theres much difference

I think you need some more HDD space :) otherwise nice job I love those cases.

LOL well keep running outta space due to my ftp server so might up it to over a terabyte soon

I think running any number of hard drives, especially if it's more than 1, without a fan actively blowing air across them is asking for trouble. Stick a Vantec stealth 120mm in the front of the case as an intake fan. Whether it helps your CPU or not, it'll make a huge difference to your hard drives. NOT running a fan in front of them is just asking for trouble.

And really, the Stealth doesn't move enough air to help the hard drives as much as I'd like (I know, because I've got one as an intake fan in my Antec 3700BQE, which has the same basic HDD cage/intake fan setup as the P160) but you wanted a quiet system.

One of these would be better (at the expense of more noise):

Of course, then you'd be putting more air into the case than you're taking out, which is the worst possible situation for airflow. So you'd have to buy another one. The stealth moves a small enough amount of air that it won't cause that problem. You may find that if you try those Sunon fans that they're not as annoyingly loud as you might think; 120mm fans produce sound at a much lower pitch than smaller fans do, and are consequently far less annoying.

And that's all very well and good until you need more than a halfassed amount of airflow...

I went through 60 (yes, 60) 80mm fans before I found ones I liked. The SF2 is the only fan that runs quietly but still has a lot of power if/when you need it.

i love 120mm case fans, i'll never go back to 80mm's

i gave up on max air flow a while back in exchange for the silence

I got sick of noisy systems as well. But you're gonna cook your hard drives. Add a stealth at least.

well the temp on my c:/ drive is only 21c so not too worried at the moment

How hot is the room's ambient tempurature? My hard drives heat up my case a ton. I have a thermal layer from the top of my case to the bottom. The bottom of my case is about 15 degrees farenheight higher than the top and with an ambient temp in the room of 70 degrees my case varies from 75-90 degrees

cant be possible. Top sould be high since heat Rises

and active cooling (i.e. with fans instead of depending on convection) combined with the less than aerodynamic insides of a computer can throw a monkey wrench into that whole "hot air rises" deal

It is true though i have a full size graphics card that pretty much cuts my case in half. I have a psu with to fans blowing air out the back, one side fan blowing air onto my cpu. one top fan blowing cool air into the case, and one fan blowing air out the back of the case. I dont have any fans on the bottom section of my case so my two hard drives and my graphics card really do heat up the bootom of my case.

Ok ive now added a 2nd 12cm fan as an intake so with 2 12 cm fans 1 intake 1 extrack and a volcano 11 on the cpu my temps have now dropped

    ambient room temp around 25-27c

    before =
    sys temp= 25c
    cpu temp = 30c
cpu temp on full load = 48c

    now=
    sys temp= 21c
    cpu temp = 28c
cpu temp on full load = 40c

If it gets any cooler the comp will be better than my fridge lol

little bit noisier but very bearable i think ill extend the leads and connect them to a fan controler that should help with the noise LOL
