WTB: Stable, no frills Socket A board.

edited November 2003 in Trading Post
Looks like the K7S5A kicked the bucket, now I'm in need of a mobo for the rent's machine.

Something like a KT7A, or another K7S5A would do fine. If you have these boards or some other Socket A board sitting around, please let me know!

If you had a Fry's you could get one of their combos and sell the chip to pay for the board as it is like getting the board for free. They have been bundling either the ECS K7S5A Pro or the ECS K7VTA3 V8.0 with various XP T'Bred B's.

    @ MF4:

    YGPMed.

@ mtgoat: I could check that out. I'd have to mail order it though, as there are no Fry's up here.

Dad went and bought a K7S5A Pro (from NE) for $40 w/ free shipping.

Never used one of these before, should be intresting.

Probably the most sold mobo over the past 2-3 years. There are tons of modded bioses and tweak threads all over da intarweb on that sucker. Am I reading that correctly, a K7S5A is being replaced by a K7S5A Pro? The 'Pro' is a new one on me, may have to take back the first part of this post, what's the diff between em?

PCB color (purple on the Pro, as I recall- I'm too lazy to dig mine out ATM) and USB 2 support on the Pro version.

It's a good little board. I've built 5 systems this year with it (Including one today). You'll need a modified BIOS if you want to OC. You can find the link here

Yeah, thats for the non-pro. I'm getting the pro. I used the modded BIOSes on the K7S5A before, and learned there's little point to using them unless you really want to get into some messy stuff (who wants to solder on a new timing crystal? Anyone?.

I think they have diffrent chipsets as well, is this true?

EDIT: Last year I was looking for something just like that XP-TMC. Prob is, for the cost you might as well get a better equiped board.

Something to keep in mind though, if my dad decides to get back into gaming.
