I'm asking the parentals for a laptop for Christmas. Which one should i get? We're looking at something around $1500 or less. I can go a little over that because i told them i'd pay what ever they didn't. My lappy must have:
  • Long battery life
  • Good sized HDD
  • WIFI
  • DVD Rom

And i guess some other things that i'll add later. What would you'll suggest?

/me just wants to go war driving :vimp:

    Sounds like a candidate for a Centrino laptop.

    Dude, you're either gettin' a Dell:
    http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_600m?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

    Or the Compaq 2100Z series if you can carry a little more weight and want an XP processor.

    Check www.powernotebooks.com

    One of their centrino notebooks may work.

    OMG11!!! That would be sweet. Out of my price range though. How long would the battery last on that thing? 15 min. max maybe. it would have to be plugged in all the time. I think powernotebooks is looking good right now but the parentals still won't give me a price range so i'm not sure what i can get ;[

    Toshiba makes good laptops; however, they're more suitable for business because of the sucky graphics.

    I won't be playing any hard core games, would i notice much of a difference from a better graphics card if i watched a lot of movies or something a long those lines?

    If the laptop is fast enough and/or has hardware DVD decoding, you won't notice any hit in movie performance watching movies.

    Acer Ferrari. XP 2500, 15" tft, dvd +-rw, 802.11g, 60gb, 512mb ram and a radeon 9200128mb video. They will retail for ~$2600 Cdn, so you might be able to get it for ~1800ish us.
    Oh, forgot it's a badass red ferrari paint on top.

    Check this Dell system out. . Pentium M 1.5, 256 ram in 1 dimm (so you can add more ram later), 64m ati mobility graphics 30 gig hd, rdcw/dvd drive and 3 year warrantee for $1850 with a $150 mail in rebate.

    I just played with an Inspiron 600m like this last time offshore; it was snappy as hell. Pretty nice for this price.

    EDIT: Use this E-value code for the way I configured it: E-Value Code: 6V421 - 600M6p

    I do NOT like Toshiba's laptops. I've looked at them several times, and I always come to the same conclusion:
    They're severely underpowered compared to what you can get from other companies.

    Gateway has a 200X that should fit your budget, i've played with it and like it a lot. get the extra battery and you should be quite happy.

    Powernotebooks is better.

    Powernotebooks is better mostly for desktop replacements and only if Dell doesn't have a sale on. That 600m is competitive with any offering from powernotebooks and include 3 years full warranty. (That's an extra $200 from powernotebooks). Both are good choices but often Dell is a better deal. You also pay a penalty for non-cash payments at powernotebooks so you need to add that in as well.

    First one was bad;
    second one was awful;
    third one was awful;
    fourth one was passable in a pinch.

    qparadox, the dell may be cheaper in some cases, but in my experience with them, my Sager, and my mom's PowerPro, the Dells are not built as well as the Sagers/PowerPros are, and the designs (in terms of cooling, component placement, etc.) are generally not as good as the Sagers/PowerPros are.

    NS... if it's that bad, I'll give you $5 for it... I could use another one :p:D

    I didn't say it was bad, just has some rather annoying traits.
