Call of Duty crashing.

I'm trying to do the Camp Toccoa mission. It loads up, and within 30 seconds crashes. I've tried looking at all the signs as fast as possible, and even made it to the obstacle course gate once, but then it just dumps me to (an EXTREMELY bright) desktop.

PC:
AthlonXP 2600+
DFI LanParty KT400A
2x512mb Corsair XMS PC433
HIS Excalibur Radeon 9600 Pro 128mb
Hercules Gametheatre XP (soundcard)

I've tried several different video modes and even changed the sound from EAX to Miles 2D Positional....same thing.

DirectX 9.0b
Catalyst 3.7 video drivers.

It's odd, cuz this PC has been rock-solid in everything else....not to mention that the CoD demo ran problem-free. :(

I had a similar problem with the game but later on with a different level. Load the game in safe mode, then play through till after it would normally crash, and then crank the detail back up. If not try going through the whole level in safe mode.

Try disabling "fast writes" in the Catalyst Control Panel Smart GART. Also do so in bios if able. Many users report this works, tho usually with 97-9800's havent seen it with a 9600 nor on a via chipset to this point... Worth a try, I'd say.

    Saw this over at Gamefaq's
I think I found a fix or atleast a work around. I have found the DLL that causes the problem and found a working DLL. The dll is ATIOGLXX.DLL located in the system32 folder. Now before anyone says anything I have tried this and just played 5 missions with out one lock up using the Cat 3.9 drivers. All you have to do is rename the current DLL to something, just as a back up and download this one and copy it into the system32 folder. Here is the link for downloading the needed dll file.

Dont know if it works as I havnt tried it but alot of people over there have. I know one or 2 have 9600's

I experience crashes as as well.

It is in the level Car ride.

I have had several different crashes.

Hard lock, no picture w/looping sound.
    Lots of funny colors.
    Sleeping Monitor with normal sound.

All with the same settings and driver.

    I will try disabling FastWrites.
    Maybe that'll cure the problem.

Look at this thread it is quite extensive.

That is the EXACT problem I had. I got around by starting the level in safe mode with everything at lowest setting, the level then loaded, and about 5 sec back in I cranked everything back up. Got me through the problem.

Only problem is that is is not at a certain point it crashes.
sometimes I get no more than five seconds into the car ride level.
Other times I can play for two minutes and then it crashes.
But I will try messing around with the options.

Wow...I didn't realize so many people were having problems with the game.

    Oh yeah...using Windows 2000 Pro ;)

I'll try the dll bit, Necropolis.

    Thanks everyone!

Never played it, but here's an idea:
Have you patched the game to the latest version?

    There is no patch yet.

The 3rd party ati dll fixed it - thanks everyone! The car mission was awesome! Usually I don't care that much for in-vehicle, rail-style shooting, but this was really fun.

    I solved my problem.
    Disabled fast writes in SmartGart.
I didn't do anything in BIOS.
Now the game is working fine.
I have just played through several levels.
    Including Car ride and Dam.
These two levels seems to be causing the crashes.

It is odd though that you'll have to disable it.
I have no problems in anything but CoD.

BTW: The solution was among the suggestions in the thread I linked to.

just curious. Is anyone with a non-modded radeon experienceing crashes?

    My Radeon isn't modded.
    It is just OC'ed. ;)

Actually it crashes with nVidia cards too.

Not modded, not oc'd, and not crashing since I swapped that dll out.

Poppi told us that ATI has released a Call of Duty driver hotfix for people which are using the ATI Radeon series. The drivers are at packaging version 7.96.

I'm using a nvidia ti4600 and have had no probs at all with CoD, apart from getting shot a lot.

    Wow that was helpful.

My 9600 Pro was crashing in CoD, running stock with 3.10 drivers.

I'll try disabling the fast writes, and then the .dll if I have too.

    Thanks for the suggestions! Cheers.
