New to folding - think I have it set up right

edited July 2007 in Folding@Home
OK. I think I have a console client running alongside a GPU Client. I have an X1900 Crossfire and X1900XT. It probably just targeted the X1900 Crossfire card, and not the XT.

Not sure how long I will fold, but we will see. I like the idea of it though.

For the GPU client it show under waiting for core: Large WU Startup (278)

It's counting up, but does that mean it is working ok?

Yup, you should be good to go  You can further check progress as Spike indicated.

It looks like the GPU client has a startup process for work units. After a while it started showing complete frames. Something like 3.6s/frame.

Kaspersky Labs AV was grabbin a chunk of cpu doin the scan when I was lookin at it. So I don't know how well the normal client is performing. It's an AM2 4600+ soon to be a 6000+. I didn't know if the SMP client was the way to go. From what I can gather that is intended for four processors.

P.S. the video cards temp shows 79C  Which is what it is when I game. So hopefully the constant use is ok.

I have noticed odd micro-pauses in Vista 64 Ultimate. Just flippin cards in solitaire I would occassionally see a card take a second to flip, instead of being instant. I'm assuming it's cuz of the GPU client.

    I guess it's all good :D

Well so much for having it setup correctly. Put in the new 6000+, rebooted, OS was corrupted.

In the process of reinstalling now. The version of this bios has weird reboot issues. Some soft reboots cause it to say that no arrays are defined. Had to hit reset each time to get it to see the array. Minor set backs.

Apparently 70Hz in Vista 64 Ultimate is a no no for my monitor. It just goes to a blank screen limbo. Safe mode doesn't let you set it back, as monitor refresh rates are not selectable in safe mode.

I'll try a restore and see how it goes.

Dang it! I had folding running on my work laptop. It was part way through on a work unit. I boot up at work and it is 0/5000 on a new unit!

It's a Compaq nw8240. Pentium 4 M 2.4Ghz with 2GB of memory. This laptop can boil water at idle. Temperature is no different a full load though, so go figure!

Folding isn't treating me very well so far, but I'm stubborn! Please forgive any typos, I seem to have wrong-key-itis lately.

Which version of the console are you running on the lappy? Some are more sensitive to the shutdown than others.
Occasional restarts are par for the course.

On your desk box you might run GPU for a few weeks and then try SMP. My 1950 just didn't seem to crank out the work like I expected. SMP is a charm.

Its the GUI and it was paused not shutdown, that may be the problem if it is paused too long it will dump the WU thinking the PC has hung.

OK. I won't pause it before shutting it down. I thought that was there so you didn't risk losing work, not to cause the loss :-) Been a while since I've had noob stamped on my forehead!
