Anyone here have personal experience with Slackware?
Still learning Ubuntu but the more I learn the more I want to learn! Slackware "sounds" as though if you have the knowledge that the machine truly becomes yours.

Maybe I should learn how to make my own GUI on top of the Linux Kernel:wink:

Cheers!

If you just want to go home, sit at your computer and not have to constantly mess around with it stick with Ubuntu. If you want a side project that you can tweak and play with and get frustrated with then setup a slackware machine.

I haven't used 12 yet, but I do plan on testing it through VMWare. Slackware releases are extremely stable, which is why they waited so long to release a version with the 2.6 kernel. You'll definitely learn a lot about Linux going with Slackware. It doesn't hand-hold, you'll have to make sure you have all your dependencies when installing packages.

I've been using it as my distro of choice on my web server since version 8. Never had a problem.

I put 12 on the ole Thinkpad i1200 the other night... had to dig up a pcmcia ether card so I could download the madwifi source and recompile it to get my wireless working. Next Alsa, then onto X... :)

Head over to http://www.slackbook.org (6 months out of date) but still great info and a good step by step.

    :)
