I was reinstalling the os on my server to make some major changes, when much to my surprise, during the copying setup files process, I get an error that it can't copy ks.sys. It’s the first time I've had this problem and I think I need a new disk. Is there anyone that can somehow send me an iso or something, or tell me how to fix this? I need to get it up asap.

Short-Media does not support warez or illegal software, cracks, keys, etc. We have no way of verifying the legitimacy of your copy. Look to Microsoft for tech support of a legitimate copy of Win2k.

Have you tried cleaning the disk with a damp paper town or using a different optical drive for the install?

    Thanks

I have had similar problems on occasion which were caused by a bum HD. It wasn't a problem with what it was trying to copy from, but rather what it was copying to.

Might want to try a different HD.

    EDIT: YGPM.

This wasn't a warez copy, someone I know in the field gave me a corprate disk. So if it is the disk, I'll be really bumed. I've tried two different cd drives to install, and it always hangs in the same spot. The disk apears to be in excelent condition. I also searched the disk for the for the file, and I can't seem to find it. So I'm thinking it just might be the disk. :(

I was thinking of the possibility that the HD could be bad as well, considering I got it off of ebay. But again, its strange that it always hangs in the exact same spot. Also win2k pro installed just fine. I dont have another HD on hand, so i'll save that as a last resort kinda deal.

Seems that memory can cause hangs in OS installs, it's the most common cause I've seen, tho there are certainly others as have been suggested. See above.

The KS.SYS file is often associated with audio driver problems. A possible solution is to disable or physically pull the audio card and install WIN2K.

But I suspect that it is the drive that is misreading the disk. Optical drives can do that. You may also try formatting the HDD with a win98SE bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com THEN attempting the reinstall of Win2k.

The other possible cause that deserves equal attention is the HDD itself as Prof pointed out. If the hard drive is making any random or continuous "odd" noises such as clicking or unusually loud noise then this too is a telltale.

If you think it might be the disk, just try copying the disk. If you can copy the disk, it's probably not the disk.

    or memtest86.com ;)

I'm thinking it's the Optical drive. I had the same thing happen this past weekend. I was trying to install off of a Lite-on 48X CDRW and it would hang on the same file time after time. I pulled a Lite-on 52XCDRW/DVD-rom out of the bubble wrap and the OS installed just fine.

BTW that corporate disk isn't black is it?? :)

i don't think you'd find ks.sys, cause it's probably ks.sy_ on the disc in the \winnt folder. all files are compressed, i mean the CD holds only 700MB max and yet you end up with a 1GB install. but yeah, try a different cdrom drive

Sounds quite a bit like memory to me. RAM can do some really disgustingly bad things to window installs...

Case in point, my friend's computer would not install Windows XP. It couldn't copy NTFS.sys, we changed HDD, CDs, CD-ROMS, etcetera...I should've gone with my gut instinct.

We changed memory, and his copy of XP installed fine.

So, as per the usual, I say check the memory.

    memtest86.com

download memtest86 and it will create either a bootable floppy or a bootable CD ISO. You boot off said media, and it will run a memory test to determine whether you have bad memory or not. It works well.

Ok, I'll try that. Because now dns wont install! AHHHHH. before it all went bad, I had some strange files that showed up in my upload folder for my ftp. There where 15 visible .xls files (not excell tho), but when I scanned them with norton, there where 30, and the names where some long HEX string. These files could not be deleted, and when I tried, I got a file system error. Could there be a relation?

Ok.... I tried to install dns without active directory, and that worked (sorta). I did run memtest86 (nifty program) and there was no problem there. So it looks like I gotta pick up another HD. Oh yea and service pack 4 won't install. i get an error half way through. Its funny, I just registered for a domain name too, before all this happened. Always just my luck. The computer gods are out to get me! HAHA! I'M LOOSING MY MIND!!MWAHAHAHAHAhahaha.....

Those files are caused by someone effectively trying to hack your FTP and gain more control over the files than you. Was it an open FTP? As there are methods that they use to create files and actually remove access so you cannot even access some of the files and folders, so they can use it as a remote warez store...

Darn hackers. I was hosting the gta vc isos for people to download, after a buddy uploaded them to me. if they had asked me in a text file for more stuff, I probably would have given them a username and password for my protected ftp download site. But, they went and messed up a good thing. Anyhow, is there some way to remove files like that in the future? I should probably put the open ftp on a separate HD so if things show up I dont like, I can just format the drive.

As for the HD, I did get it off of ebay, so who knows. Well theres a computer show tomorrow, so I guess I'll go see if i can find a new one.

If you have an open FTP on your computer, you are basically screwed. You are asking to be hacked... It's not worth it.

Made a little note about it on my site at one point. Not exactly the same problem as you, but it should fix it anyway.
