The Build Begins!!

After a summer of picking the parts, they've all arrived. Starting the build this morning so any questions I have I'll stick in this thread.

Before I've even started, I'm thinking that I may struggle with the thermal compound bit. Do you just put a dab in the middle then press down on the heatsink?

I have my laptop open for sources, current pages open are this forum, a wikibook on building a pc and a youtube video showing a build from the start.

Here I go...

Put a dot in the middle and spread it with a credit card to make a paper-thin layer across the surface of the heat spreader.

That's the motherboard installed, possible chance of damage. Never touched any of the top parts but the bits underneath might have got scratched, was hard fitting it into the case. The metal plate for the outside was hard to put on too, cut my finger but plastered up and sorted the plate.

Connecting LEDs, it has plus and minus slots, my wires don't state which they are but one has a triangle on it, i've assumed the ones with triangles are pluses, sound right?

The triangle indicates where pin 1 should go.

Your manual can show you how the pins are numbered on your board.

Finishing line in site... well the first power on is in site anyway. Just need to move my Hard Drive across from my old PC and I'll see if it all works.

Is it alright to bunch up and tidy cables in the case by using some velcro wrap things that came with the case/mobo (can't remember which now).

Right, power up, led around the on button goes on, but no fans or anything and pressing on button does nothing. Optical drives wont open, do you think this is just a case of the computer still being 'off' as I haven't properly connected the on button?

Lol sorry thought this thread had finished after my last post. Uploaded some pics, the one of the inside was when I had a question about something but the laptop I was using to connect to this forum failed so had to figure it out myself. Can't even remember the question.

The drives were very easy to put in thanks to those twist things instead of screws. Had some trouble getting the faceplate in for the usb and stuff from the motherboard (cut my finger... still have the scar... I'm such a wimp lol).

Also I put the Mobo in flat to start with wondering why nothing was fitting, then realised some screws were meant to be under it to connect to other screws on top. Eh, PSU was easy... SATA connecting easy... the Hard Drive I only hooked up on one side with that twist screw thing but it looked pretty stable. My fingers were too big to screw in the one on the other side.

Main problem with the Mobo was connecting all the little connectors like the LEDs. Might have got the pluses and minuses mixed up as my power button LED doesn't work now but I can't be bothered going in to fix it for a while.

This was me looking through the things I could do on Vista. Quite like the scrolling thing although it seems very flashy.

    Congratulations.

Maybe going back to University might cure it. Next thing you know I'll be overclocking and buying gaming mouses (http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65149)... well not overclocking anyway... til the warranties run out.

Ah, "poor student" won't have the Greenbacks necessary to build many new computers. Been there, but the excitement then was stereos, not computers.

The warranty exists to overclock. Nobody will ever know you blew it up. ;)
