    Avg Anti-Spyware
    AsQuared Anti-Malware
    Ccleaner (junk remover)
AVG or Avast or Clamwin Anti-Virus
...and the nice thing is they are all free.

...to purchase I usually recommend something like System Mechanic 7 or Tune-Up Utilities 2007 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus was excellent the last time I used it(2005).

You don't need winzip it's built into XP/Vista. Winrar though still usefull. Most people would also consider daemon tools and azureus pretty essential.

I forgot all about daemon tools, thanks.

also, I used system mechanic once and it screwed up my comp.

RegScrubXP - easy, nearly error free registry cleaner
MyUninstaller - sees and uninstalls what Windows might miss

    both are freeware
