ctfmon.exe Spybot, Norton & Stopzilla

Unknown

Spybot has detected a possible trojan on my pc ctfmon.exe I read that if this is in my windows folder it is not malware.
But it is also in c:/i386 and shows up as CTFMON.EXE-05E57A5E.pf. in c:/windows/prefetch/
Is there anything to worry about here?

Also I recently downloaded stopzilla to get rid of it, it detected various other malware some of which were hijackers/trojans but not ctfmon?

i also use norton anti virus and was wondering seeing as stopzilla has detected several things that norton hasn't should I just run Stopzilla? or can i run both seeing as norton scans my emails.

really hope you can help with this.

I'd like to see a HijackThis log first please.

Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

• Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
• Click on Install.
• It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
• Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
• Save the log to a convenient location as you'll need to post it soon.
• Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
• Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi Angelica,

I see references to two anti-virus programs (Norton and McAfee). Having two anti-virus programs is never a good idea as they will conflict and cause serious problems.

I believe you are not using McAfee, correct? Either way, one of the two anti-virus programs need to be uninstalled via Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

Note: There maybe multiple entries related to the anti-virus program. Make sure to remove them all. If you do not know which to remove, let me know. Do NOT remove anything you are unsure of.

Once that is done, post a new HijackThis log.

I could only find the uninstaller for Mcafee in the add or remove.
I also did a search on Mcafee and these came up:

Mcafee (folder) c:\documents and settings\all users\startmenu\programs

Mcafee Security Centre c:\documents and settings\all users\startmenu\programs\Mcafee

If i select these in my start menu it can't find anything. Shall I delete them?

- Click the Do a system scan only button

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6u1.
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

3. Post a new HijackThis log, and let me know if you are having any specific problems please.
