Hi Byron172 and welcome to Icrontic Spyware & Virus Removal

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thanks, I will do this ASAP. My friend just told me that she ran "Adaware SE" this afternoon!!! I told her she should not do anything until instructed, is this likely to impede our progress with the removal of this malware? (She mentioned that AVG kept detecting threats whilst Adaware was scanning and that she removed the critical objects at the end of the scan).
I am only telling you this so that you know exactly what has happened throughout, I hope it has not done any harm..........
Will post back shortly with the requested info.
    Thanks again:D

    :smiles: Hi Byron172
Things are looking good. Do you still notice any problems with "your" computer?

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
    Comodo
    Kerio
    ZoneAlarm

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
    • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
    • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
    • Select the More options tab
    • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

    Ad-aware 2007
    Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Adaware properly here

    Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.1
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

    Install Spyware Guard
    Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

    Install SpyWare Blaster
    Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

    Install WinPatrol
    Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

    Happy safe surfing!

Thanks for all your help it seems to be clean. I will set a new restore point and install one of the recommended firewalls next time I access her PC.
You are doing a great job.
    Cheers,
    Byron.
