Computer is restarting itself.

edited October 2007 in Hardware
Reboot seems to occur at anytime. I don't even have to be using the comp for it to reboot. I suspected heat, but my cpu is running at a cool 89 to 98 during normal running and 98 to 104 when playing games. Rebooting seem to start about a month back.

Comp is new:
cLone (my build)
Intel Core2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
Gigabyte MB: P35C-DS3R
BIOS version: F4, Release date: 09/07/2007
Chipset: Intel P35
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
ne ways...

Any help would be great... Happy Halloween

    Can you run memtest?

    What is your PSU?

When you wrote 98 to 104, I assume you meant Fahrenheit scale? Most of the tech community goes with Celsius. It's the convention for such things. But yeah, 98-104F is not hot.

Down with celsius. Without a thermometer, it's less accurate than fahrenheit. Fahrenheit has three times the amount of intervals per unit of radiated heat.

    It's: COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power RP-650-PCAR ATX from factor 12V V2.01 650W

memtest had errors, I'll check the BIOS setting and make sure I'm not overclocking, but I don't think I am.

to my knowledge there isn't an accurate MB monitor for intel p35 (my mb main sensor is IT8718F). I'm sure if I'm wrong someone here will let me know, ne ways, I'm currently using hardware sensor monitor 4.3 and it reports my MB at 143.6F and I'm using a temperature correction of -36F. Theres no way the MB is running that hot in windows when the cmos report 41c CPU & 34c system temps during a reboot.

Both hardware sensor monitor 4.3 and gigabytes EasyTuner5 report high MB temps while the cmos report low temps seconds later. EasyTuner5 is crap IMhO, I uninstalled it. I have a new heatpipe heatsink/fan, but I haven't installed it yet.

If memtest had errors, and you're not overclocking, your memory is the culprit.

What, are you referring to the motherboard system as a whole, or to the P35 MCH/ICH(9) chipset? If you meant the northbridge, then yeah, you might be right. Concerning the CPU, yes indeed, there is an accurate monitor - Core Temp. It reads directly off the processor-integrated thermal sensing circuitry. I just upgraded one of my machines to P35 and went through a nutroll of testing different monitors. Speedfan is also excellent, giving a reading for each core. That would be two or four depending on whether it's Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad. For Speedfan though, you must use Core Temp as a calibration reference. There may be an accurate monitoring register in Speedfan for the P35 MCH (northbridge), but I haven't figured out all the sensor readings yet.

In the CMOS set-up menu called MB Intelligent Tweaker (M.I.T.) [which is also were memory OC is, that I had not OC'ed] I had set C.I.A. 2 to Cruise which is a Increase CPU frequency by 5% or 7% depending on CPU loading about a month back. Set that back to disable. Then after I made the previous statement that I uninstalled EasyTuner5 I got to looking and saw that I didn't. I just had disabled it from run at boot. I uninstalled it and then ran the memtest w/ out rebooting yesterday. Rebooted today when I set the CIA2 to disable and ran the memtest again. Let it run for about 4 or 5 hours. The results are below. Looks like my pricey OCZ memory may be ok.

    10.31.07mem.jpg

NE ways: there were no errors in the test; ran two sessions at once testing 813MB of mem in each.

To answer your question; I don't know what I'm talking about, thats why I'm here!=_) ...all I know is that EasyTuner5 (gigabytes OCing and heat monitor gui) reported very high MB, CPU, core0 & core1 temps and may be the culprit of my whole rebooting problems. Also Hardware sensors monitor 4.3 reported high MB temp as well.

I dl'ed and started using the CoreTemp which reports Core#0 at 82F and Core#1 at 90F at idle, so this answers my heat monitoring issue. Thanx for the info Leonardo..
