Spiceworks is super sweet and free, but maybe overkill if this will be your only project like this. It requires some configuration.

OR, if the machines all run a login script already, you could just add a line to it. Have them all run systeminfo and save to a text file on a network share, but this will only report the total amount of RAM.

I've been using SpiceWorks for about a year now. Fantastic product. It will also test to see if your machines are setup right on your network as far as permissions are concerned because if they aren't you will get a lot of WMI errors on the machines.

I use SpiceWorks too. They're coming out with version 2.0 soon. I'm hoping to beta test it in the next few weeks. Amazing program, especially for the price. I don't use the help desk, but the auditing feature is a lifesaver.

thanks guys... i'lll give it a shot...

so i do need an admin previlidge on the network to be able to view these machine specs?

my main focus here is to get information about the mainboard of each machine so i can see which machine will need/able to get upgrades and which don't...

Yes you'd need to know the domain admin account as it uses that to probe the machines on the network. It also should be run on a windows 2003 server for maximum compatibility.
