Desktop Folder missing

edited November 2007 in Science & Tech
Hi everybody.
Only a small problem hopefully. So...I dont know how or why but for some reason my desktop folder under C:\Documents and Settings\Rhys Como isnt there anymore. To begin with there was only the 'My Computer' and 'Recycle Bin' icons on the desktop, but after restarting the original icons are all there. But looking through to where the Desktop folder through the C: should be, its not there. Any ideas how to retrieve this file? And is it out of the ordinary?
Thanks in advance.

Use the Search function under Start. Maybe you'll just need to put another shortcut on the desktop.

Hi again. The files is in thr right place now, but every time i move a file from the desktop to another file, the desktop doesnt automatically refresh - the icon still appears on the desktop along with its new place. So i have to right click and select 'refresh' so its done. Also, when a file is downloaded to the desktop, i have to refresh for the file to appear there. Is there a way of making the desktop how it was? Automatic, without the need to refresh every time a change is made. Thank you for any help

Wow, you've got me stumped. Sorry, I keep a very clean desktop (obsessive compulsive - I admit it) and keep only one icon, two at the most, on the desktop.

I'm sure someone will have advice for you.

Try using TweakUI from the Microsoft Windows XP Powertoys to verify that your Desktop folder is correctly identified and try the "Repair Registry" and "Repair Icons" features.

Sounds like a user rights problem. Make sure you log in as administrator. If you have any other accounts enabled, disable them ( you should only be able to do this if you are the admin ). Also how are you moving them, ie cutting or copying. What kind of files are you trying to move, Ive heard of certain file types not moving as they should. Just tryin to give you a few avenues to explore here, dont have a diffinitave answer on this one yet.
